Chapter 5 - The Ally and the Evidence

We spent the remainder of the night in a dingy, hourly-rate motel on the outskirts of the city, a place where no one asked for identification and the neon light outside buzzed like a dying insect. I stayed awake by the window, watching the parking lot with a heavy iron wrench in my hand, ready for anything.

At 8:00 AM, my burner phone buzzed. It was Julian.

"I have it," his voice came through the speaker, crisp and triumphant. "Arthur had everything. The financial records show a direct wire transfer of five hundred thousand dollars from Eleanor’s personal offshore account to the administrator of the Denver General Hospital on the exact day Emily gave birth. The memo line was listed as a 'charitable donation,' but the internal emails Arthur saved explicitly state it was for the 'complete erasure and relocation' of patient Emily Carter."

A wave of nauseating fury hit me. My mother had bought a hospital administrator like a piece of cheap machinery.

"What about the divorce papers, Julian?" Emily asked, leaning forward from the bed where the twins were quietly eating cereal.

"The divorce papers you signed, Ryan, were never filed with the court," Julian revealed. "Eleanor had a corrupt clerk stamp them with a fake registry number. Legally speaking, you and Emily are still completely, legally married. You never divorced. You are her husband, and those children are your legal, legitimate heirs. Eleanor has absolutely no claim over them."

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for two years. We were still married. The realization brought a sudden, radiant warmth to my chest despite the grim surroundings. I looked at Emily, and for the first time in forty-eight hours, a small, genuine smile touched her lips.

"So, what's the next step?" I asked Julian. "Do we go to the board of directors?"

"No," Julian said, his voice dropping to a serious tone. "Tonight is the annual Vance Corporate Gala at the Hyatt Regency. Eleanor is set to announce a massive merger that will cement her power forever. Every major media outlet, investor, and board member in the state will be in that room. If we expose her there, she cannot hide behind her lawyers. The public fallout will destroy her stock value instantly, and the board will be forced to strip her of her chairmanship to save the company."

"We're going to crash the gala," I said, my voice hardening into steel.

"We are," Julian agreed. "But you need to dress the part, Ryan. You're not a fugitive tonight. You are the rightful heir to the Vance empire, and you’re bringing your family home."
