Chapter 6 - The Golden Trap

The Hyatt Regency ballroom was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive tuxedos, and flowing champagne. Classical music drifted through the air as hundreds of Denver's elite mingled under massive crystal chandeliers. At the center of it all stood Eleanor Vance, looking regal in a emerald green gown, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, a sharp, triumphant smile on her face as she shook hands with billionaire investors.

She thought she had won. Her security team had reported losing my trail, but she assumed I was simply hiding out of grief or confusion. She had no idea the trap was about to close on her.

At precisely 9:00 PM, the massive double doors of the ballroom swung open.

The classical music seemed to falter as the crowd turned to look. I walked in, wearing a tailored black tuxedo, my posture straight, my head held high. But I wasn't alone. On my arm was Emily, stunning in a simple but elegant midnight-blue silk dress Julian had procured for her. And between us, holding our hands, were Leo and Maya, dressed in beautiful matching formal wear.

Whispers broke out across the room like wildfire.

"Is that Ryan's wife? I thought she died in an accident!" "Look at those children... they look exactly like him!"

Eleanor froze. The champagne glass in her hand trembled so violently that a few drops spilled onto her pristine gown. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her looking old and fragile beneath her expensive makeup.

I walked directly down the center aisle of the ballroom, the crowd parting for us like the Red Sea. Julian followed closely behind, carrying a sleek digital tablet connected to the ballroom’s massive presentation screens.

"Ryan," Eleanor choked out as I reached the stage, her voice a sharp, desperate whisper. "What is the meaning of this charade? Who are these people?"

"You know exactly who they are, Mother," I said, my voice projecting clearly through the microphone attached to my lapel, echoing into every corner of the silent room. "This is my wife, Emily Vance. The woman you told me died two years ago. And these are my children, Leo and Maya. The grandchildren you stole from me."
