Chapter 2: The First Crack in the Prescott Empire

Chapter 2: The First Crack in the Prescott Empire

The emergency room hallway had never been quieter.

Not because people had stopped watching.

Because everyone was.

Nurses pretended to organize charts.

Doctors lingered near the nurses' station.

Even patients sitting in wheelchairs glanced toward the observation room where one of Charlotte's most influential families had just discovered that power didn't always guarantee obedience.

Ethan Prescott lowered his phone slowly.

"Our attorneys resigned."

The words sounded foreign coming from him.

Impossible.

Margaret Prescott immediately reached for her own phone.

"Nichols & Grant has represented our family for thirty years."

"They don't resign."

She dialed the senior partner herself.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Then the call disconnected.

A text message appeared instead.

Effective immediately, Nichols & Grant is withdrawing as legal counsel for the Prescott family. We wish you the best moving forward.

Nothing more.

No explanation.

Margaret stared at the screen.

Her face hardened.

"They've been threatened."

Colonel Victoria Hart calmly closed her phone after speaking with General Carter.

"No."

She looked directly at Margaret.

"They made a decision."

Brandon laughed sarcastically.

"You expect us to believe one Army colonel scared the biggest law firm in North Carolina?"

Victoria didn't answer.

She had spent nearly thirty years in uniform.

One lesson had never failed her.

When people underestimated you...

Let them.

Inside the observation room, Emily had finally fallen asleep.

The medication had eased her pain, but her breathing remained uneven.

Victoria quietly pulled the hospital blanket over her daughter's shoulders.

Dr. Rebecca Lawson entered carrying a fresh medical file.

"Colonel Hart."

Victoria turned.

"I've completed the full examination."

She handed over several printed photographs documenting Emily's injuries.

Bruises around both wrists.

Finger-shaped marks on her upper arms.

Healing bruises across her back.

A partially healed cut near her left shoulder.

Victoria looked at every image.

She didn't flinch.

She simply memorized them.

"When were these taken?"

"Within the last hour."

"And they'll remain in hospital records?"

The doctor nodded.

"And duplicate copies have already been secured."

Victoria looked surprised.

"You moved quickly."

Dr. Lawson lowered her voice.

"I've treated domestic abuse victims before."

"My records have disappeared once."

"They won't disappear again."

Victoria gave the doctor a respectful nod.

"Thank you."

Meanwhile...

Across town.

Inside the Prescott family estate.

Chaos had erupted.

Luxury no longer hid panic.

Housekeepers hurried through the marble hallways.

Lawyers arrived only to leave minutes later.

Phones rang constantly.

Margaret's assistant rushed into the study.

"Mrs. Prescott..."

She was out of breath.

"The board wants an emergency meeting."

Margaret frowned.

"For what?"

"The stock price."

Brandon scoffed.

"Our company isn't publicly connected to this."

The assistant swallowed nervously.

"Someone leaked photographs."

Silence.

"What photographs?"

The assistant handed over a tablet.

Every major local news outlet displayed the same headline.

LOCAL WOMAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER ALLEGED ABUSE INSIDE PROMINENT BUSINESS FAMILY.

Below it...

A photograph.

Emily.

Leaving the ambulance.

Wrapped in a hospital blanket.

Her bruised wrists clearly visible.

Margaret's expression darkened.

"Who took this?"

"No one knows."

Brandon refreshed the page.

Another article appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

National media had begun picking up the story.

Back at Mercy General Hospital...

Officer Daniel Brooks approached Victoria.

"We've requested a search warrant."

Victoria nodded.

"For the Prescott estate?"

"Yes."

"But..."

He hesitated.

"They have influential friends."

Victoria smiled faintly.

"They're about to find out..."

"...so do I."

Before Officer Brooks could ask what she meant...

Three black SUVs quietly pulled into the hospital entrance.

No flashing lights.

No government markings.

Just black vehicles.

Four men and one woman stepped out.

Dark business suits.

Small American flag lapel pins.

Discreet earpieces.

Hospital security immediately stood straighter.

One nurse whispered,

"Who are they?"

No one answered.

The group walked directly toward Victoria.

The woman extended a leather credential.

"Colonel Victoria Hart?"

"Yes."

"I'm Special Agent Melissa Grant."

"Department of Defense."

Victoria looked surprised.

"I wasn't expecting anyone."

"We know."

Agent Grant smiled politely.

"Neither was the Prescott family."

Margaret noticed them immediately.

She whispered to Brandon,

"Who are those people?"

Brandon shrugged.

"Probably military public relations."

Agent Grant stopped in front of Victoria.

"Ma'am."

"The Secretary of Defense has been informed."

Victoria blinked.

"The Secretary?"

"Yes."

"And he asked us to ensure you have every federal resource available."

Margaret stepped forward confidently.

"This is a private family matter."

Agent Grant slowly turned toward her.

"No."

"It became a federal concern..."

"...the moment credible allegations suggested coercion against the daughter of an active-duty United States Army Colonel."

Margaret's confidence faltered.

"We know judges."

Agent Grant smiled.

"I'm sure you do."

"We know federal judges."

The hallway fell silent.

Brandon attempted to recover.

"This is ridiculous."

"My brother hasn't even been charged."

Officer Brooks stepped beside him.

"Actually..."

He unfolded a document.

"He has."

Everyone turned.

"The district attorney has approved preliminary charges pending further investigation."

Ethan frowned.

"Already?"

Officer Brooks nodded.

"Unlawful restraint."

"Witness intimidation."

"Coercive control."

"And felony assault."

Margaret looked genuinely stunned.

"At eleven o'clock at night?"

Officer Brooks answered simply.

"Some prosecutors work late."

Victoria noticed something unusual.

Ethan wasn't angry.

He was...

Nervous.

Not about himself.

About something else.

She had seen that expression before.

On battlefields.

Soldiers who feared an unseen threat.

She quietly stepped closer.

"Ethan."

He ignored her.

She spoke again.

"What are you worried they'll find?"

His eyes flickered.

Only for an instant.

Enough.

She had her answer.

There was something inside the Prescott estate he desperately wanted hidden.

An hour later...

Judge Eleanor Whitman signed the search warrant.

The speed shocked everyone.

Even Officer Brooks admitted he'd never seen one approved so quickly.

Television crews had already gathered outside the Prescott mansion.

Helicopters circled overhead.

As police vehicles entered the gated property, reporters broadcast live across the country.

Inside...

Margaret stood in the grand foyer.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

The lead detective calmly handed her the warrant.

"We're looking for evidence related to Ms. Emily Hart Prescott."

Brandon crossed his arms.

"You won't find anything."

The detective smiled politely.

"I hope you're right."

The search began.

Bedrooms.

Home offices.

Security systems.

Storage rooms.

Guest quarters.

Then...

One young officer called out.

"Detective!"

Everyone hurried toward the detached guest house.

The building looked luxurious from the outside.

Inside...

It felt different.

The windows had been reinforced.

Heavy curtains blocked sunlight.

A keypad lock had been installed on the inside of the front door.

The detective frowned.

"Who installs a lock..."

"...to keep someone from leaving?"

Margaret answered immediately.

"It was for security."

No one believed her.

An officer entered the upstairs bedroom.

Seconds later...

His voice echoed downstairs.

"You need to see this."

The room was immaculate.

Too immaculate.

Designer furniture.

Fresh flowers.

Expensive artwork.

Yet something felt wrong.

Victoria arrived just behind the detectives.

She walked slowly through the room.

Then stopped beside the nightstand.

A framed wedding photograph.

Emily was smiling.

Ethan looked charming.

Perfect.

Victoria picked it up.

The frame was heavier than expected.

She turned it over.

Tiny scratches surrounded the back panel.

Someone had opened it recently.

She carefully removed the backing.

Inside...

Hidden behind the photograph...

Was a folded piece of notebook paper.

Emily's handwriting.

Victoria unfolded it carefully.

It contained only one sentence.

Written in shaky blue ink.

If anyone finds this... please tell my mother I tried to leave.

No one spoke.

Officer Brooks quietly removed his hat.

Even the detectives who had investigated violent crimes for decades looked shaken.

Victoria gently folded the note and placed it into an evidence bag.

Her hands remained perfectly steady.

Inside...

Her heart broke.

Emily hadn't simply hoped for rescue.

She had prepared...

For the possibility that no one would ever come.

As officers continued searching the room, another detective called from the closet.

"Detective..."

"I found something else."

He stepped into the light holding a small steel lockbox.

The lock had already been forced open.

Inside...

Were five cell phones.

Three passports.

A stack of credit cards.

And one driver's license.

Every one of them belonged...

To Emily.

But none of them had ever been reported missing.

Officer Brooks slowly looked toward Ethan Prescott.

His voice was quiet.

"Mr. Prescott..."

May you like

"Were you planning to tell us..."

"...why your wife needed five confiscated phones and three hidden passports?"
