Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Curtain

Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Curtain

The digital forensics laboratory became eerily quiet.

The final recording had ended, but its last sentence lingered in everyone's mind.

"If Colonel Hart gets involved... we'll make sure she never wears that uniform again."

No one spoke.

Colonel Victoria Hart remained standing beside the computer, her posture as straight as it had been during every military briefing of her thirty-year career.

She wasn't angry.

She was thinking.

Detective Daniel Brooks finally broke the silence.

"Can we identify the voice?"

The lead forensic technician adjusted his headphones.

"I'll try."

He isolated the final sentence, filtering out background noise.

Keyboard clicks echoed through the room.

Waveforms danced across multiple monitors.

After several minutes, he looked up.

"There are at least three people in the room."

Brooks frowned.

"Three?"

"The unknown male."

"Ethan Prescott."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"Someone breathing heavily."

Victoria narrowed her eyes.

"Emily?"

The technician nodded.

"It sounds like she was hiding nearby."

Emily closed her eyes.

"I was."

Everyone looked at her.

"I left my recorder inside a flower vase."

She swallowed.

"I thought if they found my phone..."

"...I'd lose everything."

Victoria gently squeezed her daughter's shoulder.

"You were preparing for the day someone believed you."

Emily nodded silently.

The Name Nobody Expected

The technician continued enhancing the audio.

More voices became clearer.

Margaret Prescott.

Brandon Prescott.

Then...

The unknown man laughed.

A short laugh.

Confident.

Arrogant.

The technician isolated it.

"That laugh..."

He frowned.

"I've heard it before."

Detective Brooks looked surprised.

"Where?"

The technician turned toward him.

"I used to work for Mecklenburg County."

"We analyzed public speeches."

He quickly opened a government audio database.

One file.

Another.

Then...

A match.

96.8% probability.

The technician slowly turned the monitor around.

Everyone stared.

The screen displayed a photograph.

Governor Richard Langford.

North Carolina's sitting governor.

Brooks' face turned pale.

"That can't be right."

Victoria didn't react.

"Run it again."

The technician did.

97.1% probability.

Silence.

Emily whispered,

"He came to dinner."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Emily looked toward the window.

"Twice."

"Ethan said he was an old family friend."

Margaret closed her eyes.

For the first time...

Fear replaced arrogance.

Washington Responds

Victoria's secure military phone vibrated.

Only official numbers could reach it.

She answered immediately.

"Hart."

The voice belonged to General William Carter.

"Victoria..."

"I hope you're sitting down."

"I'm standing."

"You may want to keep standing."

His tone was unusually serious.

"The recording reached Washington."

Victoria frowned.

"Already?"

"It never came through us."

"What do you mean?"

General Carter sighed.

"Someone anonymously forwarded it..."

"...directly to the Department of Justice."

Victoria remained silent.

The General continued.

"The FBI has opened an inquiry."

"So has the Army Criminal Investigation Division."

"And..."

He paused.

"The Inspector General."

Victoria understood immediately.

If someone had threatened an active-duty Army Colonel using political influence...

Federal agencies would treat it very seriously.

"Who's leading the investigation?"

General Carter answered.

"They're sending someone from Quantico."

The FBI Arrives

The next morning...

Mercy General Hospital looked more like a federal command center than a medical facility.

Black SUVs lined the entrance.

Reporters crowded behind barricades.

Camera flashes lit up every arriving vehicle.

At precisely 8:00 a.m., another convoy entered.

Four agents stepped out.

Leading them was a woman in her early forties.

Dark blue suit.

Short brown hair.

Confident stride.

She approached Victoria.

"Colonel Hart?"

"Yes."

She displayed her credentials.

"Special Agent Rebecca Collins."

"Federal Bureau of Investigation."

She offered a firm handshake.

"I'm taking over."

Detective Brooks smiled awkwardly.

"I figured as much."

Collins nodded respectfully.

"You've done excellent work."

Then she turned toward Victoria.

"Ma'am..."

"We believe this case is much larger than domestic abuse."

Victoria answered quietly.

"I've believed that since yesterday."

The Prescott Estate

Federal agents arrived with new search warrants.

This time...

They weren't looking for physical abuse.

They were looking for corruption.

Computers.

Financial records.

Private servers.

Security backups.

Within two hours...

They found something unexpected.

Hidden beneath the Prescott family's wine cellar...

A climate-controlled archive room.

Rows of locked filing cabinets.

Hundreds of labeled boxes.

Special Agent Collins slowly opened the first drawer.

Inside were folders.

Not business documents.

People.

Each folder contained information on a different individual.

Judges.

Journalists.

Police officers.

Business executives.

State legislators.

Every file included photographs.

Financial records.

Personal weaknesses.

Private conversations.

Blackmail.

Brooks whispered,

"My God..."

Victoria looked at another folder.

Its label stopped her cold.

HART, VICTORIA

She carefully opened it.

Inside...

Were photographs taken over nearly fifteen years.

Her deployment schedule.

Her military evaluations.

Pictures of Emily graduating college.

Photos of Victoria attending Army ceremonies.

Even surveillance images of her shopping at a grocery store near Fort Liberty.

Emily covered her mouth.

"They were watching you..."

Victoria slowly nodded.

"For years."

Emily Remembers

Back at the hospital...

Emily stared blankly at the ceiling.

Something about the files kept bothering her.

Then...

A memory surfaced.

"Mom."

Victoria looked up.

"Ethan used to say something."

"What?"

Emily frowned.

"He'd get phone calls."

"Then he'd tell his mother..."

She hesitated.

"What did he say?"

Emily whispered,

"'The Committee approved it.'"

Special Agent Collins immediately looked up.

"What committee?"

Emily shook her head.

"I never knew."

"But they always acted differently afterward."

Collins quickly wrote the phrase down.

"The Committee."

"It sounds organized."

Victoria quietly replied,

"It sounds bigger than one family."

The Betrayal

Late that afternoon...

Brandon Prescott finally requested a private meeting.

Only one condition.

He would speak...

To Victoria.

Alone.

Inside an interview room at FBI headquarters, Brandon looked exhausted.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

Dark circles surrounded his eyes.

He barely resembled the arrogant man from the hospital.

Victoria entered.

He didn't look at her.

"I want immunity."

Victoria sat across from him.

"I can't give you that."

"I know."

"I still need to talk."

Silence stretched between them.

Finally...

Brandon spoke.

"You think my mother runs everything."

Victoria remained quiet.

"She doesn't."

He looked up.

"There are families richer than ours."

"Older than ours."

"They don't appear in magazines."

"They don't run for office."

"They choose who does."

Victoria listened carefully.

"The Prescotts work for them."

"What families?"

Brandon laughed bitterly.

"I don't know their names."

"I only know one person."

"Who?"

He swallowed.

"The Chairman."

Victoria frowned.

"Name."

"I've never heard it."

"What does he look like?"

"I've never seen his face."

She studied him.

He wasn't lying.

He genuinely didn't know.

"What do you know?"

Brandon leaned forward.

"Only this."

"When someone says..."

"'The Committee approved it'..."

"...no one argues."

Victoria slowly stood.

She believed him.

Not because of his words.

Because of his fear.

He wasn't afraid of prison.

He was afraid of someone else.

Someone powerful enough to terrify even the Prescott family.

The Midnight Attack

That night...

Emily finally slept peacefully for the first time in weeks.

Victoria sat quietly beside her hospital bed reading case notes.

Outside...

Rain began falling over Charlotte.

The hallway remained heavily guarded.

Two FBI agents.

Two Charlotte police officers.

One Army Military Police officer.

No unauthorized visitors.

Or so everyone believed.

At 1:17 a.m.

A nurse entered carrying medication.

She smiled politely.

"Time for your pain medicine."

Victoria looked up.

Something felt...

Wrong.

The uniform looked correct.

The identification badge looked genuine.

But the shoes...

Hospitals required soft rubber soles.

This nurse wore polished black leather shoes.

Military instinct took over.

Victoria stood.

"Excuse me."

The nurse froze.

"What department are you with?"

A brief pause.

Then...

Without answering...

The woman dropped the medication tray.

Glass shattered across the floor.

She reached inside her uniform.

Victoria reacted instantly.

She grabbed Emily's bed and shoved it sideways just as a suppressed gunshot cracked through the room.

The bullet struck the wall where Emily's head had been seconds earlier.

"DOWN!" Victoria shouted.

FBI agents burst through the doorway.

The fake nurse sprinted toward the emergency exit.

A chase exploded through the hospital corridors.

But before disappearing around the corner...

The woman deliberately looked back.

Just long enough...

For Victoria to see the silver pendant hanging around her neck.

A circular emblem.

Black enamel.

A single engraved letter.

C.

Not P.

Not for Prescott.

"C," Victoria whispered.

Special Agent Collins caught up beside her.

"What?"

Victoria's eyes remained fixed on the empty hallway.

"The Committee..."

"They're no longer hiding."

And for the first time since Emily's desperate phone call...

Victoria realized the Prescotts had never been the true enemy.

They had merely been one branch...

Of something far larger.

Something powerful enough to infiltrate hospitals...

Threaten Army officers...

And attempt murder under federal protection.

May you like

The real war...

Had only just begun.
