Chapter 3: The Locked Room

Chapter 3: The Locked Room

The guest house fell into complete silence.

Officer Daniel Brooks stood in the middle of the bedroom, staring at the evidence spread across the bed.

Five confiscated cell phones.

Three passports.

Emily's driver's license.

A stack of unopened bank statements addressed to her.

Every item had been hidden inside the steel lockbox beneath a pile of folded blankets.

Ethan Prescott said nothing.

For the first time since arriving at the hospital, the confidence that had always defined him was gone.

Officer Brooks looked directly at him.

"Mr. Prescott..."

"I'm asking you one last time."

"Why were these hidden?"

Ethan slowly lifted his chin.

"I don't answer questions without my attorney."

Brooks nodded.

"That's your right."

He closed the evidence box.

"And now it's mine to seize."

Two forensic technicians immediately photographed every item before carefully sealing them into evidence bags.

Margaret Prescott stepped forward.

"This is absurd."

"My son was protecting his wife."

Colonel Victoria Hart quietly asked,

"From what?"

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"From herself."

Victoria looked toward the passports.

"People protect someone from themselves..."

"...by taking three passports?"

Margaret had no answer.

Emily's handwritten note weighed heavily in Victoria's pocket.

She hadn't stopped thinking about it.

If anyone finds this... please tell my mother I tried to leave.

That wasn't the note of someone having an emotional episode.

It was the note of someone who believed she might disappear.

Victoria had seen similar letters before.

Not during military operations.

During humanitarian missions overseas.

People trapped by abusive captors often hid messages wherever they could.

Inside shoes.

Behind mirrors.

Under loose floorboards.

Hope had a habit of finding tiny spaces to survive.

Detective Lisa Nguyen stepped into the bedroom carrying a tablet.

"We've recovered the security system."

Daniel Brooks looked up hopefully.

"Anything?"

Lisa nodded.

"More than we expected."

She connected the tablet to a portable monitor.

The first camera appeared.

Front entrance.

Emily walking toward the guest house.

Then...

Nothing.

Eight hours missing.

The recording suddenly resumed the next morning.

Daniel frowned.

"Someone deleted the footage."

Lisa shook her head.

"No."

"They disabled the cameras."

She enlarged the timeline.

Every missing segment began at exactly the same second each day.

7:00 p.m.

Every evening.

For nearly six weeks.

Victoria narrowed her eyes.

"They followed a schedule."

Lisa nodded.

"Every night."

The detective looked toward Ethan.

"Care to explain why your guest house security system stopped recording every evening?"

Ethan remained silent.

Brandon answered instead.

"The cameras malfunctioned."

Lisa looked unimpressed.

"Every night."

"For six weeks."

"At exactly seven o'clock."

Brandon said nothing.

A young forensic technician suddenly called from downstairs.

"Detective!"

"I found another room."

Everyone hurried to the ground floor.

The guest house blueprint showed only six rooms.

But behind a large bookshelf...

A narrow wooden door had been concealed by custom paneling.

The detective carefully opened it.

The room inside measured barely eight feet by ten feet.

No windows.

No decorations.

Only a narrow bed.

A metal chair.

A small sink.

Victoria's heartbeat slowed.

She recognized the feeling immediately.

This wasn't a bedroom.

It was a holding room.

Officer Brooks slowly walked inside.

"What is this place?"

Margaret spoke first.

"A panic room."

Victoria quietly corrected her.

"No."

"A panic room locks from the inside."

She pointed toward the heavy steel latch.

"This locks from the outside."

Silence.

Daniel Brooks examined the door.

She was right.

The bolts could only be secured by someone standing outside the room.

Lisa found deep scratch marks near the handle.

Someone had repeatedly tried to pull the door open.

Victoria gently ran her fingers across the grooves.

Fresh.

Not old.

Emily.

Without warning, one of the crime scene photographers spoke.

"Colonel..."

Victoria turned.

He pointed toward the wall beside the bed.

Tiny pencil marks.

Almost invisible.

She walked closer.

At first they looked random.

Then she counted them.

One.

Two.

Three.

Thirty-nine.

Forty.

Forty-one.

Forty-two.

Each mark represented one day.

Emily had been counting.

Victoria closed her eyes for a moment.

Forty-two days.

Her daughter had been imprisoned here for forty-two days.

She didn't cry.

She simply took a slow breath.

Then opened her notebook again.

One more fact.

Forty-two tally marks.

Outside...

Television helicopters continued circling overhead.

Reporters crowded behind police barriers.

The story had spread nationwide.

One news anchor spoke into her microphone.

"The investigation into the influential Prescott family continues tonight as authorities discover additional evidence inside a private guest residence..."

Across social media...

Millions of people watched.

The Prescott name had become synonymous with scandal.

Their company stock dropped another nine percent before markets even closed overseas.

Meanwhile...

Inside the Prescott corporate headquarters.

The emergency board meeting had become a disaster.

Twelve directors sat around a polished mahogany table.

Margaret Prescott entered confidently.

"We need unity."

No one applauded.

Instead...

Board Chairman Charles Whitaker slid a folder across the table.

"We've received twenty-three resignation letters."

Margaret frowned.

"From whom?"

"Our investors."

"Our sponsors."

"Our charity partners."

Brandon leaned forward.

"This media storm will pass."

Charles slowly shook his head.

"It isn't the media."

He turned the folder toward them.

Inside...

Were photographs.

Emily's injuries.

The hidden room.

The tally marks on the wall.

The handwritten note.

Every director silently stared.

Finally, Charles spoke.

"If even half of this is true..."

"...our company will never recover."

Margaret slammed both hands onto the table.

"Our family built this corporation!"

Charles answered quietly.

"No."

"Your employees did."

"And they don't want to work for people accused of imprisoning their own daughter-in-law."

Back at the guest house...

Victoria remained inside the hidden room alone.

Something continued bothering her.

Everything had been almost...

Too obvious.

The lockbox.

The tally marks.

The hidden note.

Abusers often hid evidence.

Here...

It almost seemed as though Emily wanted someone to find it.

Victoria slowly knelt beside the narrow bed.

Military training had taught her to search systematically.

Left to right.

Top to bottom.

Nothing.

Then...

Her fingers touched something beneath the wooden frame.

Tape.

She carefully peeled it away.

A tiny USB flash drive.

Officer Brooks looked stunned.

"Another one?"

Victoria nodded.

Emily had hidden it well.

Almost professionally.

The detective immediately sealed it into an evidence bag.

"We'll send it to digital forensics."

Victoria stopped him.

"No."

Brooks looked confused.

"Why?"

"If Emily hid this..."

"...she wanted someone she trusted to see it first."

Just then...

Emily herself entered the guest house in a wheelchair, accompanied by Dr. Lawson and two officers.

She had insisted on returning.

The moment she saw the hidden room...

Every color drained from her face.

Her breathing became rapid.

Victoria rushed beside her.

"You don't have to go in."

Emily slowly shook her head.

"I do."

She looked toward the pencil marks.

"I stopped counting after forty-two."

Victoria gently held her daughter's hand.

Emily noticed the evidence bag containing the flash drive.

Her eyes widened.

"You found it."

Victoria nodded.

"What's on it?"

Emily looked at Ethan across the room.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

Not nervous.

Afraid.

Emily whispered,

"I recorded everything."

Complete silence.

Officer Brooks stared at her.

"What do you mean... everything?"

Emily swallowed hard.

"The arguments."

"The threats."

"The conversations."

"The times they locked the door."

"The things they said when they thought no one could hear."

Brandon suddenly stepped forward.

"That's illegal!"

Every officer turned toward him.

Victoria asked quietly,

"Illegal..."

"...for whom?"

Brandon immediately realized his mistake.

He had just admitted there were conversations worth hiding.

Officer Brooks smiled for the first time that day.

"I think we'll let the district attorney answer that."

Late that evening...

Inside the digital forensics laboratory.

Technicians carefully connected Emily's flash drive to an isolated computer.

Folders appeared one by one.

Audio 01.

Audio 02.

Audio 03.

More than one hundred recordings.

Hours of evidence.

The lead technician clicked on the first file.

Emily's frightened voice filled the speakers.

Then Ethan's.

Cold.

Controlled.

"You'll stay here until you learn loyalty."

The room became silent.

The second recording began.

Margaret Prescott's unmistakable voice echoed clearly.

"Your mother is an Army colonel. Do you know how easily reputations disappear?"

Detective Brooks slowly looked at Victoria.

"This case just changed."

But then...

The final folder appeared.

Unlike the others, it had no title.

Only one date.

Yesterday.

The technician clicked it.

Static crackled for several seconds.

Then...

An unfamiliar male voice spoke.

Calm.

Confident.

Powerful.

"If Colonel Hart gets involved..."

A short pause followed.

Then the man finished his sentence.

"We'll make sure she never wears that uniform again."

Victoria's expression didn't change.

But everyone else in the room understood the implication immediately.

This investigation had just grown far beyond the Prescott family.

Someone outside the house...

Someone with influence...

May you like

Had been planning to destroy a United States Army Colonel before she ever arrived.

And no one yet knew who that voice belonged to.
