Chapter 1 - The Gathering of the Wolves

The air inside Elena’s apartment felt thin, charged with a terrifying, absolute silence after Alexander spoke. He didn't rise immediately from his knees. For three full minutes, the man who had built a multi-million-dollar real estate and logistics empire across North Texas simply knelt by the fabric sofa, his large, calloused hand hovering a mere fraction of an inch above Sofia’s torn wedding gown. His thumb traced the air over the jagged purple swelling on her left jawline, never actually making contact, as if he feared his touch alone might break whatever fragile piece of his daughter was left holding together.

Elena stood by the kitchen counter, her knuckles white where she gripped the laminate edge. She watched her ex-husband. Ten years of bitter silence, of court-mandated mediations, of cold Christmas checks sent through corporate attorneys—all of it seemed to evaporate, replaced by the primitive, brutal reality of the blood on the cream-colored carpet.

"Alexander," Elena whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of the domestic horror. "The hospital... she begged me not to. They told her—"

"I heard her, Elena," Alexander said. His voice didn't carry the explosive rage she had expected. Instead, it was dropped into a flat, cavernous register that made the hairs on Elena’s arms stand up. It was the tone he used when he was about to liquidate a competitor’s holding company. He turned his head slowly, his gray eyes locking onto Sofia’s swollen features. "Sofia. Look at me, baby girl."

Sofia blinked through her swollen right lid, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dried, copper-colored crust under her nose. "Dad... Javier... he’s a lawyer. He said if I go to the police, his firm has the city magistrates in their pocket. He said they’d tie you up in character defamation suits until you were bankrupt. And Carmen... she said she’d find Mom."

Alexander let out a short, dry sound that wasn't a laugh. It was the sound of iron hitting granite. He stood up, his six-foot-two frame instantly dominating the modest living room. The wrinkled linen shirt he had thrown on in his rush looked out of place against the sheer gravity of his presence, but the gold Patek Philippe watch on his wrist gleamed coldly under the cheap ceiling fan.

"Javier Robles is a junior associate at a mid-tier defense firm that survives on city council kickbacks," Alexander said, pulling a heavy black encrypted phone from his trousers. He didn't look at the screen as his thumb navigated the glass by memory. "His mother owns three unregistered medical supply warehouses on the edge of Irving. They aren't a dynasty, Sofia. They are parasites who mistook a gentleman’s silence for weakness."

He hit a speed dial button and put the phone to his ear. He didn't wait for the person on the other end to greet him.

"Marcus," Alexander commanded. "Wake up the entire legal compliance team. I want a full asset freeze petition filed against the Robles Logistics group by 6:00 AM. Use the emergency maritime-lien clause if you have to. Then call Dr. Vance at the private medical pavilion in Medical District. Tell him my daughter is arriving through the secure basement garage in fifteen minutes. If a single piece of paper with her name on it enters the public county health database, I will buy his hospital group and fire him by noon."

He dropped the phone back into his pocket and turned back to the couch. Without asking, he slid his arms beneath Sofia’s knees and her uninjured shoulder, lifting her with a smooth, heavy precision that didn't disturb the torn satin of her dress.

"Elena, grab her shoes and whatever medication she has here," Alexander said, already moving toward the door. "We’re using my car. The apartment building’s security cameras have already been looped for the next two hours. Nobody saw her come in, and nobody is going to see her leave."

"Alexander, wait," Elena said, her heart hammering against her ribs as she grabbed her purse and Sofia’s discarded silver heels from the floor. "What about Javier? He’s going to notice she’s gone from the hotel suite. He’ll come here."

Alexander paused in the open doorway of the apartment, the dim yellowish light of the corridor casting a long, skeletal shadow behind him. He looked down at the copper stains on Sofia’s white silk train, then back at Elena.

"Let him come," Alexander whispered. "My security detail is already waiting in the lobby. If Javier Robles sets foot on this street before the sun comes up, he won't need a courtroom to lose his license."

As they moved down the service elevator, Sofia’s breathing became shallow, her small fingers catching the fabric of her father’s shirt. "Dad... the condo. Carmen had the deed transfer forms ready on the hotel desk. She had a mobile notary with her. One of the women... she held my hand down on the paper, but I... I managed to pull my fingers back before the ink dried. That’s when she started using the heavy gold chain around her neck."

Alexander’s chest rose and fell in a slow, dangerous rhythm. He didn't say a word, but Elena saw the muscle in his jaw clench so hard that a thin blue vein began to pulse near his temple. The elevator doors opened into the cold, concrete underbelly of the parking garage, where a massive, armored black Cadillac Escalade sat with its engine humming like a sleeping beast.
