Chapter 4 - The Currency of Fear

Javier Robles felt the air leave his lungs. As an attorney, he had spent years studying the hierarchy of power in Dallas, and he knew exactly who Alexander Arden was. He knew that the man before him didn't just own buildings; he owned the companies that built the buildings, the transport networks that supplied them, and the political action committees that funded the district attorney’s re-election campaign.

"Mr. Arden," Javier stammered, his polished demeanor dissolving into a high-pitched panic. He tried to straighten his posture, but his eyes kept drifting to the two security guards behind the older man. "I... we didn't know you were in town. Sofia... there’s been a massive misunderstanding. She had a sudden panic attack after the reception. She started throwing things in the room, she hurt herself on the glass, and then she fled—"

"Shut up, Javier," Alexander said. The cadence was low, almost conversational, but it had the weight of a closing steel door.

"Don't you speak to my son like that!" Carmen snapped, her pride overcoming her initial shock. She stepped in front of Javier, her mink coat rustling loudly. "We are the Robles family! We don't care about your money, Alexander. Sofia is my son’s legal wife as of six o'clock yesterday evening. She belongs to our house now. If you are harboring her here, you are interfering with a matrimonial household, and we will file an emergency injunction before the family court opens—"

"Marcus," Alexander said, not looking back.

From the shadow of the apartment’s small dining room, Marcus stepped into the light, holding a thick sheet of legal parchment with a red corporate seal.

"At 5:45 AM, the state district court signed an emergency protective order against you, Carmen Robles, and your son, Javier," Marcus announced, his voice flat and clinical. "You are currently within one hundred feet of a protected party’s residential zone. If you take one step forward, or if you remain in this hallway for another sixty seconds, the two gentlemen behind Mr. Arden are authorized under Texas penal code to detain you using necessary force until the county sheriff arrives."

Carmen’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Her eyes flew to the red seal on the document. "A protective order? On what grounds? You have no medical records, you have no police report—"

"We have forty linear contusions on my daughter’s back, Carmen," Alexander said. He stepped forward, out of the apartment door, forcing Carmen and Javier to retreat down the narrow hallway toward the elevators. The sheer mass of his body seemed to compress the space around them. "We have the gold chain you left on the hotel nightstand, which my forensic team retrieved twenty minutes after you left. And we have the digital recordings from the hotel corridor showing your six associates entering that suite with a mobile notary."

Javier’s face went translucent. "Mr. Arden... please. We can talk about this. The condo... it was just a business arrangement to help with the family’s transition. We can modify the pre-nuptial agreement. We can settle this privately."

"There is no settlement, Javier," Alexander said, standing right before the elevator doors as they chimed open behind the two Robles. "Your father’s tax lien on the Irving terminal will be bought by my holding company at 9:00 AM. By noon, your family’s logistics certificates will be suspended for safety violations we discovered on your public manifests. And by tomorrow morning, your senior partner at the firm will receive a complete digital archive of your billing records for the city transport contracts."

He reached out and tapped Javier’s chest with two cold fingers, right over the silk fabric of his tuxedo shirt. "You told my daughter that you were a lawyer and that you owned the magistrates. Let’s see how many magistrates stay on your side when you don't have enough money to pay the electric bill at your mother’s house."

"You can't destroy us in twenty-four hours, Alexander!" Carmen screamed as Javier pulled her into the elevator car, his hands shaking so hard he could barely press the ground floor button. "We have friends! We have people in the city council!"

"I don't need twenty-four hours, Carmen," Alexander said as the steel doors began to slide shut, cutting off her voice. "I have the whole week."
