Chapter 5 - The Financial Guillotine

By noon on Monday, the rain had stopped, but the financial district of Dallas was under a different kind of storm.

Inside the executive boardroom of the Arden Building on Ross Avenue, the table was covered in high-definition monitors displaying real-time banking transactions, property deeds, and maritime shipping schedules. Alexander sat at the head of the long glass table, his tie undone, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms as six senior financial analysts worked in near-silence around him.

"The Irving terminal has collapsed, Mr. Arden," the lead analyst reported, hitting a key that turned a large block of the screen from green to a dark, terminal red. "The Lone Star National Bank just accepted our cash offer for the $2.4 million note. We are now the primary lien-holder on the Robles family’s entire physical infrastructure. We’ve issued an immediate asset-freeze notice based on their default of the environmental maintenance clauses."

"What about their transport fleet?" Alexander asked, his eyes never leaving the numbers.

"The Texas Department of Transportation just pulled twenty-two of their commercial trucks off the road for unregistered weight violations," Marcus said, stepping into the room with a fresh set of documents. "We tipped off the state troopers about the alternative fuel manifests they’ve been using to avoid the state diesel tax. Carmen Robles’ primary distribution company is currently paralyzed on Interstate 35. Her drivers are being detained for questioning."

Alexander took a slow breath, his fingers tapping a rhythmic, lethal cadence against his coffee mug. "And Javier?"

"The senior board at Harris & Associates just called an emergency meeting," Marcus replied with a cold smile. "They found thirty-two instances of over-billing on the city housing authority contracts under Javier’s digital signature. They aren't just firing him, Alexander; they’re drafting a formal referral to the State Bar of Texas for permanent disbarment. He’ll receive the notice by certified mail before five o'clock."

The door to the boardroom opened, and Elena walked in. She looked exhausted, her eyes ringed with dark circles, but her posture was straighter than it had been in years. She looked at the screens, at the systematic destruction of the family that had arrived at her home three months earlier with gold chains and expensive perfume.

"How is she?" Alexander asked, his voice dropping into that softer register he reserved only for his blood.

"The nerve block is working," Elena said, sitting down in the chair beside him. "Dr. Vance said her internal bleeding has stopped. She asked for you, Alexander. She... she still can't believe you’re doing all this. She thought you forgot about her after the divorce."

Alexander went perfectly still. He looked down at his large hands, at the scars across his knuckles from his early years working the loading docks in Houston before he built his empire.

"I never forgot her, Elena," he said softly, his voice carrying a sudden, rare note of regret that made Elena look at him with a softness she hadn't felt in a decade. "I spent ten years building a wall around myself because I thought the money was the only thing that could protect her from the kind of people I have to deal with every day. I thought if I kept her out of my world, she’d stay clean. I was wrong. The monsters just found her through a different door."

He stood up, pulling his jacket over his shoulders. "Marcus, take over the terminal liquidation. I want the deeds to the Robles warehouses transferred to Sofia’s name by tomorrow morning. Let’s see how Carmen Robles likes paying rent to the girl she called a dog."
