Chapter 3 - The Bait is Swallowed

The next morning, the trap was set in motion.

From my hospital bed, I watched the digital clock on the wall tick down the minutes. Dr. Reed entered the room at exactly 9:00 AM, her face set in hard lines. She held an iPad displaying the hospital’s internal insurance portal.

"The notification was sent to Ethan Carter’s personal and corporate email accounts exactly four minutes ago," Dr. Reed stated, her voice tight with professional anticipation. "We used a priority emergency medical flag. It bypasses standard spam filters and requires an immediate digital receipt acknowledgment."

"Did he open it?" I asked, my heart thumping wildly against my ribs.

"He opened it within forty-five seconds," Dr. Reed replied, showing me the screen. A small green light indicated that the recipient had read the message. "And look here. Our security team just monitored his corporate parking garage. Ethan just left his office building in a hurry. He didn't even take his briefcase. He’s in his Mercedes, and according to the GPS toll tags we have a legal wire on through the DA's warrant, he’s heading straight toward his mother’s house in Alamo Heights."

"He’s picking her up," I murmured, a mixture of dread and fierce anticipation swirling in my stomach. "He can't handle a crisis without her telling him what to think. He’s terrified that my 'accident' will ruin his chance at the senior partnership next month."

"Let him be terrified," Dr. Reed said, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We’ve moved you to a secure holding room behind the ICU. Room 314 is currently staged with a medical dummy under the sheets and a low-intensity heart monitor recording a simulated failing pulse. If they try to sneak into your room before going to the administrative office, they will see exactly what we want them to see: a dying woman."

By 10:30 AM, Marcus Vance entered the holding room, accompanied by Detective Ramirez, a veteran investigator from the San Antonio Police Department. Ramirez was a short, stocky man with an impressive mustache and eyes that looked like they had cracked a thousand unrepentant liars.

"They just entered the hospital parking structure," Detective Ramirez reported, pulling a small radio receiver from his belt. "Our plainclothes officers spotted them. Ethan is driving. Linda is in the passenger seat, and get this—she’s clutching a large leather handbag tightly against her stomach. Our thermal scanners at the entrance suggest there's a heavy, dense wooden object inside that bag."

"The rolling pin," I said, my voice trembling with a sudden surge of memory. "She keeps it like a trophy. She always said it belonged to her grandmother, that it was used to keep 'disobedient staff' in line on their old plantation land. She probably brought it to intimidate me into signing whatever papers Ethan drew up in the car."

"Perfect," Marcus Vance said, rubbing his hands together. "Carrying the weapon into a medical facility with intent to intimidate a federal witness. That elevates the state aggravated assault charge to a federal coercion charge. They are digging their own graves, and they haven't even taken the elevator yet."

"Detective, are the cameras live in Consultation Room B?" Dr. Reed asked.

"Crystal clear, Doc," Ramirez replied. "Two high-definition pinhole cameras with full audio capture. The District Attorney is streaming the feed live from her office downtown. The moment Ethan signs that fake non-disclosure and liability waiver he’s undoubtedly bringing, he’s sealing his own indictment."

The intercom on the wall buzzed with a sharp, static hiss. The receptionist’s voice came through, clear and trembling slightly. "Dr. Reed? Mr. Ethan Carter and Mrs. Linda Carter have just arrived at the fourth-floor nurse's station. They are demanding to see the attending physician immediately. They look... very angry."

Dr. Reed looked at me, giving me a sharp, decisive nod. "It’s time. Stay here, Elena. Watch the screens. Watch your monsters fall."
