Chapter 5 - The Trap Slams Shut

In Consultation Room B, Dr. Reed slowly picked up Ethan’s legal waiver, holding it between two fingers as if it were a pieces of soiled linen.
"Mr. Carter," Dr. Reed said, her voice dropping the clinical facade entirely, turning into something cold, hard, and utterly terrifying. "I have been a forensic medical specialist for twenty-five years. I have testified in over two hundred trial cases involving blunt-force trauma. A spiral fracture of this magnitude cannot be caused by falling down stairs. It requires a concentrated, repetitive strike from a dense, cylindrical object—like a heavy wooden rolling pin, wielded by someone standing directly over the victim."
Ethan’s smile froze. The color began to drain from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, chalky gray. "What... what are you talking about? Are you accusing my mother of something?"
"She isn't accusing anyone, Ethan," a new voice spoke from the doorway.
The double doors of the consultation room swung open with a heavy bang. Marcus Vance stepped into the room, his hands slid casually into his pockets, followed by Detective Ramirez and two uniformed Bexar County deputies with their hands resting on their utility belts.
"Vance?" Ethan gasped, his eyes widening in recognition. "What the hell are you doing here? This is a private medical matter. Get the fuck out of this room before I have you disbarred!"
"You can't disbar me from a prison cell, Ethan," Marcus said smoothly, stepping to the side to let Detective Ramirez take the center of the room.
"Ethan Carter, Linda Carter," Ramirez said, pulling a laminated card from his pocket. "You are both under arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, subornation of perjury, and tampering with a witness in a pending criminal investigation."
Linda surged out of her chair, her face contorting into an expression of pure, demonic rage. She reached for her heavy leather bag, but before her fingers could touch the zipper, one of the uniformed deputies stepped forward with lightning speed, pinning her arms behind her back with a sharp clack of steel handcuffs.
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Linda shrieked, her voice echoing down the hospital corridor. "Do you know who we are? My late husband was a judge! My son is the top attorney in this city! Ethan, do something!"
Ethan was paralyzed. He stared at the handcuffs on his mother’s wrists, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps. "This is a mistake... there’s no proof... Elena isn't even here to testify! She’s delirious! She’s gangrenous!"
"Elena is perfectly fine, Ethan," Dr. Reed said, stepping away from the table. "Her leg is safely pinned, her mind is perfectly clear, and she has been watching this entire conversation from a secure room down the hall. Every word you just said—every lie about self-harm, every attempt to extort a medical waiver—has been recorded on a secure digital feed directly to the District Attorney's office."

Marcus Vance leaned down, his face inches from Ethan’s terrified eyes. "Your firm dropped you forty-five minutes ago, Ethan. When the DA issued the arrest warrant, we sent a copy of the electronic indictment to your managing partner. You aren't a lawyer anymore. You’re a defendant. And I’m going to make it my personal mission to ensure you get the absolute maximum sentence under Texas law."
Ethan dropped back into his chair, his body trembling violently as the second deputy stepped forward, pulling his arms behind his back to snap the cuffs into place. The arrogant, untouchable corporate prince of the Carter family was gone; in his place sat a broken, pathetic boy, weeping silently as he realized his empire of cruelty had vanished in a single morning.
