Chapter 4 - The Art of the Lie

Through the high-definition monitor in my secure room, I watched Ethan and Linda step into Consultation Room B.

Ethan looked exactly as he had on the night he left me on the kitchen floor: his hair perfectly gelled, his white dress shirt immaculate, though a dark ring of sweat was beginning to form beneath his collar. Linda walked beside him like a displaced queen, her chin thrust high, her fingers white as she clutched the heavy leather bag. They didn't look like worried relatives; they looked like corporate executives preparing to liquidate a failing subsidiary.

Dr. Reed entered the room a moment later, carrying a clipboard, her face completely expressionless.

"Mr. Carter, Mrs. Carter," Dr. Reed said, her voice dropping into a perfectly fabricated tone of clinical exhaustion. "Thank you for coming so quickly. Your wife’s condition has deteriorated significantly over the past twelve hours."

Ethan didn't even sit down. He leaned across the table, his voice carrying that familiar, arrogant clip that used to make me shrink into myself. "Where is she, Doctor? Why wasn't I notified three days ago? This is a massive violation of my rights as her primary spouse and policyholder. My mother and I have been frantic."

Frantic. I almost laughed aloud at the monitor. They hadn't called the police. They hadn't filed a missing person report. They had spent three days hoping I would die quietly in some ditch so they wouldn't have to deal with the mess.

"She was admitted as a Jane Doe due to the severity of her cognitive disorientation," Dr. Reed explained smoothly, sitting down and sliding a set of medical charts across the table. "She was found by a passing motorist near the highway, completely delirious. The spiral fracture in her right leg has developed severe compartment syndrome, which has now turned gangrenous. If we do not amputate the limb within the hour, the toxins will cause total renal failure. She will die, Mr. Carter."

Linda let out a sharp, dismissive sniff. "Typical Elena. Always making a spectacle out of nothing. A broken leg doesn't turn into gangrene in three days unless she was living like an animal in the woods. She probably did it to herself to spite this family."

"Mother, let me handle this," Ethan snapped, though his eyes were fixed on the medical charts. He pulled a crisp, folded document from his inside jacket pocket and slid it toward Dr. Reed. "Before I sign any surgical consent forms, I need the hospital to execute this internal acknowledgment. My wife has a history of severe psychiatric delusions and self-harming tendencies. This injury was entirely self-inflicted during a manic episode at our home. This document releases my family and my insurance from any civil liability regarding her care or the circumstances of her admission."

"I see," Dr. Reed said, her eyes dropping to the document. "You want me to certify that this was self-inflicted before you consent to saving her life?"

"Exactly," Ethan said, a smug, confident smile breaking through his tension. "If she dies on your table without this signed, my legal team will tie this hospital up in malpractice suits for the next decade. Sign the acknowledgment, Doctor, and I’ll sign your amputation consent. Let’s get this over with."

"And you, Mrs. Carter?" Dr. Reed asked, turning her sharp gaze toward Linda. "Do you agree with your son’s assessment? Was this injury truly self-inflicted?"

Linda slammed her heavy leather bag onto the table with a loud thud. "Of course it was! The girl is unstable. She threw herself down our basement stairs because I told her her cooking was substandard. My son is a saint for putting up with her. If she loses the leg, it's God's judgment for her deceitfulness."

Behind the camera, in my secure room, Detective Ramirez let out a low whistle. "Subornation of perjury, filing a false insurance affidavit, and visual confirmation of the weapon in the bag. They just painted a target right on their foreheads."

Marcus Vance stood up, adjusting his tie. "That’s my cue. Let’s go collect our prize."
