Chapter 2 - The Peacemaker’s Bankruptcy

The separation of assets was not a gentle process. While Margaret was escorted upstairs by one of the police officers to stuff her designer clothes into two mismatched suitcases, Arthur Pendelton sat at the mahogany dining table, laying out a series of legal notices in front of Ethan.

Ethan sat in his chair, his head in his hands, looking completely diminished. The arrogant, composed husband who always knew how to "manage" things had vanished, replaced by a man who realized his entire lifestyle had been an illusion funded by the woman he had failed to protect.

"These are the emergency temporary separation filings, Mr. Thorne," Arthur explained, his fountain pen clicking with a sharp, metallic finality. "Effective immediately, your access to the joint household operational account has been terminated. The secondary credit cards issued under the Hayes Consulting corporate umbrella have been deactivated."

"My cards?" Ethan looked up, a sudden flash of panic crossing his features. "Arthur, my company’s regional marketing dinner is tonight. I'm hosting the regional directors. The corporate card is linked to Lauren’s primary business account for cash-flow verification!"

"Then I suggest you use your personal salary account, Mr. Thorne," Lauren said, standing by the large windows overlooking the manicured front lawn. She didn't look at him; her eyes were fixed on the locksmith, who was currently changing the digital deadbolts on the heavy front door, the sharp whir of the drill signaling the permanent erasure of Ethan’s access codes.

"Lauren, my personal account only has four thousand dollars in it right now!" Ethan pleaded, standing up from the table, his face pale. "You know my salary goes entirely toward my student loans and the luxury vehicle leases! We agreed that your consulting revenue would handle the heavy lifting while I built my equity profile!"

"No, Ethan," Lauren turned around slowly, her amber eyes burning with a quiet, lethal intensity. "You agreed to that structure while allowing your mother to sit at my dinner table and call me a parasite. You let her tell our neighbors that I was an anchor around your neck. You sat there, cutting your steak, smiling like a peaceful little saint, while your mother treated the woman who bought your car like a servant."

"I was just trying to keep her happy until her condo money cleared!" Ethan cried, his voice cracking. "She's my mother, Lauren! She’s old-fashioned! She doesn't understand how remote brand strategy works! She thinks if you aren't in an office, you don't have a real career!"

"Her ignorance is not my liability, Ethan. And neither is your pride," Lauren said.

Upstairs, a loud thud signaled Margaret dragging her suitcases down the hallway. She descended the stairs accompanied by the police officer, her face twisted into a mask of pure, venomous hatred. Her ivory silk robe had been replaced by a sharp woolen coat, but without her flawless environment, she looked small, bitter, and suddenly very old.

"This isn't over, Lauren," Margaret hissed, stopping at the bottom of the stairs, her manicured nails digging into the handle of her suitcase. "We will sue you for every dime of equity Ethan put into this place. We will drag your name through every social circle in Oceanside City. You think you're so clever with your little computer contracts? Let's see how your luxury beauty clients feel when they find out you threw an old woman onto the street in her bathrobe!"

Arthur Pendelton let out a short, elegant laugh from the table. "Mrs. Thorne, I highly advise you to close your mouth. My client has already authorised the release of the unedited kitchen surveillance footage to the Oceanside District Attorney's office. By noon, there will be an active warrant for your arrest for second-degree felony assault with a deadly weapon. If you speak to my client or attempt to damage her professional standing, I will personal ensure your bail is set at an unreachable figure."

Margaret’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, her arrogance completely evaporating into the cold reality of a criminal charge. The police officer gripped her elbow firmly. "Time to move, ma'am. Let's go."

As the front door closed behind his mother, Ethan dropped to his knees in the foyer, looking up at Lauren with tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "Lauren... please. Don't do this to me. I love you. I'll make her apologize. I’ll send her to a home. Just don't ruin my life."

May you like

Lauren looked down at him, her face completely empty of the warmth that had sustained their marriage for three years. "You ruined your own life, Ethan, the moment you decided that my dignity was a reasonable price to pay for your peace."

She turned to Arthur. "Have the locksmith finish the side doors. I'm going to my office."
