Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Backlash

By Monday morning, the digital landscape of Oceanside City’s corporate sector had experienced a massive tectonic shift. Lauren Hayes did not hide her injuries, nor did she allow the narrative to be controlled by the Thorne family gossip network.
As a senior brand strategist, she understood exactly how to manage a crisis: you don't react; you define the reality before the enemy can spin the lie.
She walked into the executive boardroom of LuxeVerve Cosmetics—the multi-billion-dollar beauty conglomerate that retained her consulting firm for half a million dollars a year. She wore a sharp, asymmetrical black power suit that elegantly incorporated a specialized silk sleeve to cover her medical dressings. Her skin was pale, but her eyes held the diamond-hard focus of a general.
The board members, including the CEO, a formidable woman named Vivienne Vance, sat in absolute silence as Lauren laid her laptop on the glass conference table.
"Good morning, everyone," Lauren said, her voice resonant and completely unshakeable. "Before we review the Q3 launch metrics for the winter line, I want to address a personal matter that has entered the public record. Last Thursday, I was the victim of a domestic assault inside my residence, executed by my mother-in-law, Margaret Thorne."
A collective gasp ran through the room. Vivienne Vance leaned forward, her brow furrowing with deep concern. "Lauren, we saw the police blotter reports this morning. Is it true? The DA has filed felony charges?"
"Yes," Lauren nodded, clicking her remote. The large projector screen at the end of the room lit up, displaying the high-definition panoramic clip captured by her kitchen's smart-hub camera.
The board watched in stunned horror as the video played out in real-time: Lauren standing calmly by the counter; Margaret’s face twisting into a mask of pure, venomous rage; the sudden, violent heave of the boiling kettle; and the agonizing burst of steam as Lauren stumbled back, clutching her burning flesh while Margaret pointed toward the door like a medieval executioner.
"My God..." one of the senior vice presidents whispered, covering her mouth with her hand.
"The Thorne family has spent the last forty-eight hours attempting to leak a narrative to the local business journals claiming that my remote work status was an operational cover for a mental breakdown," Lauren said, her voice dropping into that quiet, lethal baseline. "They intended to use this fabrication to undermine my credibility as the lead strategist for your upcoming five-point market integration."
Vivienne Vance stood up, her hand slamming onto the table with an authority that matched Lauren’s own. "Not on my watch, Lauren. LuxeVerve has built its entire global brand on the empowerment and protection of women. The Thorne family’s subsidiary logistics firm currently handles twenty percent of our regional product distribution, correct?"
"Yes, Vivienne," Lauren replied. "Ethan Thorne is the regional manager for that specific branch."

"Terminate the contract," Vivienne ordered, turning to her chief legal officer. "Revoke their vendor status effective at the close of business today. Transfer the distribution logistics to the Robinson Group. And file a formal corporate statement announcing our absolute solidarity with our Senior Strategist."
Lauren looked at the projector screen, where the image of Margaret’s rage was frozen in time. The trap was springing, and the teeth were made of the very money Margaret had claimed she didn't earn.
