Chapter 5 - The Legal Noose Closes

The county jail's intake facility was dark, smelling of industrial bleach and old sweat. Margaret Thorne sat on a concrete bench, her ivory silk robe long gone, replaced by a rough, oversized green jumpsuit that scratched her skin. Her hair was unwashed, her makeup smeared across her wrinkled cheeks as she stared through the scratched plexiglass window at her son.

Ethan sat on the opposite side of the visitor’s partition, his appearance equally ruined. He hadn't shaved in three days, and his clothes were wrinkled from sleeping on the sofa of a cheap motel near the highway.

"Ethan, you have to get me out of here," Margaret wept, her manicured nails tapping frantically against the glass. "The women in this cell... they're monsters, Ethan. They steal my food. The guards won't give me my blood pressure medication. Call your lawyer! Tell them to post the bail!"

"There is no bail, Mother," Ethan said, his voice completely flat, dead, and empty of the warmth he had spent his life using as a shield. "Arthur Pendelton filed an emergency high-risk motion. Because you threatened Lauren’s career and have no permanent address since selling your condo, the judge declared you a flight risk and a danger to the victim. You’re being held without bail until the preliminary hearing on Thursday."

"What?" Margaret gasped, her eyes widening with a sudden, primal terror. "The judge can't do that! I’m a respectable woman! I lived in a luxury condo for fifteen years! Tell Lauren to withdraw the charge! Tell her I’ll apologize! I’ll give her the money from my condo sale!"

"Your condo money went into the Thorne Capital subsidiary lease last month, Mother, which is now bankrupt because LuxeVerve canceled our distribution contract," Ethan said, a bitter, twisted smile appearing on his lips. "I’m broke, Mother. I was fired on Monday. The leasing company took the car yesterday. The bank is freezing my personal accounts because Lauren’s lawyers filed a corporate embezzlement inquiry regarding the secondary credit cards I gave you."

Margaret shook her head frantically, her hand pressing against her mouth as she began to sob. "No... no, this is impossible. She was just a girl in leggings... she didn't do anything... she sat on that couch all day..."

"She was running the entire regional market from that couch, Mother!" Ethan roared, his voice cracking with a sudden, violent rage that made the intake guard step closer to his chair. "She makes fifty thousand dollars a month! She bought the house! She paid for your groceries! She paid for the wine you drank while you called her a parasite! She didn't stay quiet because she was weak, Mother—she stayed quiet because she didn't think you were important enough to fight! And you threw boiling water on her!"

The guard tapped the glass with his heavy metal flashlight. "Visiting time is over, Thorne. Back to the block."

As Margaret was led away, screaming and weeping into the dark corridor of the jail, Ethan sat alone in the visiting room, finally understanding the true cost of his "peace."
