Chapter 4 - The Trap is Sprung

The offices of Apex Development were located on the top floor of a towering glass skyscraper downtown. The room was sterile, filled with minimalist black furniture and massive windows overlooking the city. When I walked in at precisely ten o'clock, Brandon and Courtney were already seated at a long conference table, looking smug and triumphant. Opposite them sat Mr. Marcus Vance, a notorious, hard-nosed real estate developer known for tearing down historic neighborhoods.

"Ah, the mother arrived," Marcus Vance said, his voice deep and transactional. "Excellent. Your son tells me you are providing the supplementary liquid capital to finalize their collateral for the transaction."

"Mom, over here," Brandon called out, tapping a chair next to him. "We’re just about to sign the deed transfer for our house over to Mr. Vance. He’s giving us a three-hundred-thousand-dollar cash advance today, and the rest upon demolition next month."

"Demolition?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly, though not from fear. "You are demolishing my home?"

Courtney rolled her eyes dramatically. "Oh, Eleanor, don't start with the sentimental nonsense now. It's an old shack. This money is going to build our empire. Just give us the bank draft so we can sign the papers."

"Go ahead and sign, Brandon," I said softly, sitting down but keeping my purse closed. "Sign the transfer."

Brandon eagerly grabbed the expensive pen provided by Vance. With a swift, practiced motion, he signed his name on the deed transfer document, followed quickly by Courtney’s signature as his spouse. They slid the papers across to Marcus Vance, who smiled broadly and opened a briefcase filled with stacks of bound hundred-dollar bills—the cash advance.

"Perfect," Vance said, sliding a receipt toward Brandon. "Sign here to acknowledge receipt of the three hundred thousand dollars."

The moment Brandon’s pen left the paper on the receipt, the heavy glass doors of the conference room swung open. James Whitaker walked in, flanked by two uniformed police officers and a court-appointed bailiff.

Brandon jumped to his feet, his face turning pale. "What the hell is this? Mom, who are these people?"

"Mr. Brandon Miller, Mrs. Courtney Miller," James Whitaker announced in a calm, booming voice that echoed off the glass walls. "I am James Whitaker, legal counsel for the Arthur Miller Estate and Family Trust. I am here to inform you that the document you have just signed is a fraudulent transfer of property."

Courtney shrieked, standing up so fast her chair flipped backward. "What are you talking about? Brandon inherited that house! It’s his!"

"Incorrect," James said, stepping forward and placing a certified copy of the original family trust deed directly over the papers Brandon had just signed. "The property located at 142 Elm Street belongs solely and exclusively to Mrs. Eleanor Miller. Brandon Miller holds zero legal equity, zero rights of transfer, and zero authority to occupy or sell the premises."

Marcus Vance’s eyes widened in fury. He looked at the trust document, then at the cash in his briefcase, and finally at Brandon. "You tried to sell me a stolen property? You signed a legal affidavit claiming sole ownership!"

"No, there’s been a mistake! Mom, tell them!" Brandon panicked, reaching out to me, his hands shaking violently. "Tell them it's my house!"

I stood up, pulling my bruised wrist out from my sleeve, exposing the dark purple marks his fingers had left the night before. I looked my son dead in the eye—the boy I had worked double shifts for, the boy I had starved myself to feed.

"The only mistake I made, Brandon," I said, my voice strong, steady, and cut with ice, "was believing that you had a shred of humanity left in you. You threw me into the rain. You tried to steal my life savings. And now, you have legally ruined yourself."

The police officers stepped forward, handcuffs clicking open. "Brandon Miller, Courtney Miller, you are under arrest for grand fraud, real estate forgery, and elder abuse."
