Chapter 5 - The Fallout

The chaos that followed inside the corporate office was deafening. Courtney screamed and cursed, accusing me of destroying her family, while Brandon broke down into tears, begging me to drop the charges. As the police led them out in handcuffs, past the staring eyes of office workers, I felt a strange mixture of profound sadness and overwhelming relief. The heavy weight that had rested on my shoulders for three long years was finally gone.

Marcus Vance was furious, but his anger was directed entirely at Brandon and Courtney. "If your attorney hadn't stepped in, Mrs. Miller, I would have lost a massive advance to those grifters. My legal team will ensure they face the maximum penalty."

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," I said quietly, before walking out with James.

We drove straight to the police station to finalize the statements and file a formal restraining order. Because of the severity of the fraud—attempting to illegally sell a property valued at over half a million dollars and taking a $300,000 fraudulent advance—the judge denied bail for both Brandon and Courtney pending their arraignment.

But my immediate concern wasn't my son or his wicked wife. It was my grandchildren.

James and I drove back to the house on Elm Street. The house looked different now—no longer a prison, but a sanctuary waiting to be cleansed. I opened the front door with my own key, a key Brandon had tried to demand from me just twenty-four hours ago.

Lily and Toby were sitting on the living room sofa, huddled together under a blanket. Courtney's sister, a negligent woman who had been left to watch them, was passed out on the armchair with an empty bottle of wine nearby. I immediately shook her awake and ordered her out of my house. She didn't argue, grabbing her purse and fleeing before I could call the police on her too.

I knelt down in front of the children. Toby looked up, his eyes red from crying. "Grandma? Is Mom and Dad in trouble? They said you were trying to take our home away."

I reached out, pulling both of them into a tight, warm embrace. "No, my sweet darlings. Nobody is taking your home away. Grandma is here now. And as long as I am alive, no one will ever hurt you, stress you, or make you feel unsafe again."

Lily wrapped her small arms around my neck, sobbing softly. "I missed you last night, Grandma. It was so cold."

"I know, baby. But the storm has passed," I whispered, looking up at the beautiful, sturdy walls of my home. "The storm is finally over."
