Chapter 7 - The Trial and the Truth

The day of the sentencing hearing arrived three months later. The courtroom was cold, smelling of old wood and polished marble. I sat in the front row, holding a small wooden cross in my hand. James sat beside me, a calming presence.

Brandon and Courtney were led in wearing bright orange jumpsuits, their wrists bound by heavy chains. The contrast was shocking. Courtney’s glamorous facade was completely shattered; her hair was unwashed, and her face looked hollow and bitter. Brandon looked broken, his shoulders slumped, his eyes red.

When Brandon saw me sitting there, flanked by the majesty of the law, he began to weep openly. "Mom... please," he mouthed across the courtroom. "I’m sorry. Please help me."

Courtney, however, hissed under her breath, glaring at me with venomous hatred until the bailiff sharply tapped his nightstick on the table. "Quiet in the court."

The judge, a stern woman with decades of experience, reviewed the case files. "In my thirty years on the bench," she began, her voice echoing with absolute authority, "I have rarely seen a case of elder abuse and financial fraud so calculated and heartless. To evict your own seventy-one-year-old mother into a rainstorm, to physically assault her, and to attempt to fraudulently liquidate her lifelong home to fund a vanity business venture is abhorrent."

She looked down at Brandon and Courtney. "Do you have anything to say before I pass sentence?"

Brandon stood up, his chains rattling loudly. "Your Honor... I was desperate. We were under so much financial pressure. Courtney kept saying we needed the money... I didn't mean to hurt my mom. I love her. Please, give me a second chance."

Courtney remained silent, her jaw tight, refusing to apologize.

The judge slammed her gavel down with a sound like a gunshot. "The court accepts the plea agreement, but given the severity of the emotional and physical distress caused to the victim, I sentence you both to eight years in the state correctional facility, followed by five years of strict financial supervision upon release. You are strictly forbidden from contacting Eleanor Miller or the children, Lily and Toby Miller, until they reach adulthood."

As they were led away, Brandon looked back at me one last time, a look of profound, agonizing regret on his face. I didn't look away. I watched him go, accepting the pain, but knowing that this justice was the only thing that could ever truly save him from himself.
