Chapter 4 - THE SNAKES IN THE GRASS

The transition into her new life was dizzying. Within three weeks, Lily went from a nervous waitress at Lombard’s to the executive director of the Harper-Moretti Trust. She had an office on the top floor of the Moretti corporate building, a wardrobe of elegant, tailored dresses that complemented her lush, curvy figure, and a purpose that made her jump out of bed every morning.

Vincent was a constant presence. He dropped by her office every afternoon under the guise of "checking the ledger," but the lingering looks and the way his hand lingered on her waist whenever they walked together told a different story. The shy, quiet girl from the restaurant was beginning to bloom under his attention, her confidence growing with every family she helped.

But peace in Chicago never lasted long.

One evening, Vincent took her out to dinner at a high-end restaurant in the Loop. It wasn't Lombard’s; this was an exclusive, jacket-required establishment where the city's elite—both legitimate and illegitimate—rubbed shoulders.

Lily looked beautiful in a deep emerald-green dress that accentuated her hourglass silhouette, her brown curls cascading over her bare shoulders. Vincent couldn't take his eyes off her, his usual cold demeanor replaced by an attentive warmth that was reserved strictly for her.

"You look stunning tonight, Lily," Vincent said, raising his glass of red wine to her.

"Thank you, Vincent," she smiled, her cheeks dimpling. "I still feel like I'm playing dress-up sometimes, but... I'm happy. Really happy."

Before Vincent could reply, the shadow of a man fell over their table.

"Vincent! I didn't expect to see you out of your fortress tonight," a loud, oily voice boomed.

Lily looked up to see a man in his late forties, dressed in a flashy silk suit with a massive diamond ring on his pinky finger. His eyes were small, dark, and predatory, and the moment they landed on Lily, they traveled down her neckline with an explicit, disgusting slowness.

Vincent’s posture went rigid instantly. The warmth vanished from his face, replaced by a terrifying, mask-like stillness.

"Salvatore," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a low, warning hiss. "I am having a private dinner. Leave."

Salvatore Luchesi was the underboss of the outfit that controlled the south side of Chicago—the Moretti family's fiercest rivals. He chuckled, ignoring Vincent’s warning, and leaned closer to the table, his eyes locked on Lily.

"And who is this lovely piece of meat, Vincent?" Salvatore purred, reaching out a hand as if to touch Lily’s bare shoulder. "I didn't know you liked them so soft and juicy. Usually, you prefer your distractions a bit more... refined."

Before Salvatore’s fingers could touch Lily’s skin, Vincent moved with the speed of a striking viper.

He grabbed Salvatore’s wrist, twisting it downward until the man’s knuckles slammed into the wooden table with a sickening crack. Vincent didn't stand up; he simply leaned forward, his face inches from Salvatore’s pale, sweating visage.

"If you ever look at her again, Salvatore, I will pull your eyes out of your skull," Vincent whispered, his voice so quiet it barely carried over the restaurant's jazz music, yet it contained enough malice to freeze the blood in Lily’s veins. "If you touch her, I will slaughter everyone who carries your last name. Get out of my sight before I change my mind about letting you leave this room alive."

Salvatore gasped in pain, his face turning a mottled purple as Vincent finally released his grip. The underboss stumbled back, cradling his injured wrist, his small eyes burning with a mixture of fear and pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You're getting weak, Moretti," Salvatore hissed, backing away toward his bodyguards who had just rushed into the room. "Bringing a civilian girl into the light? You’re making yourself vulnerable. Remember that."

Salvatore turned and marched out of the restaurant, his men following close behind.

The restaurant went quiet, the surrounding patrons pretending to be deeply engrossed in their food. Lily sat frozen, her heart pounding against her ribs, her emerald dress suddenly feeling like a target.

Vincent turned back to her, his face softening instantly as he reached across the table to cover her trembling hands with his own.

"Lily, I am sorry," he said, his voice raw with a rare emotion—regret. "I should not have brought you here. I wanted to show you off to the world, but I forgot how many snakes are hiding in the grass."

Lily looked at him, her fear slowly being replaced by a strange, fierce protectiveness. She had seen the way Vincent had defended her, without hesitation, without care for the political consequences within the criminal underworld.

"I'm not afraid of them, Vincent," she said, her voice steadying as she looked directly into his steel-gray eyes. "Not as long as I'm with you."

Vincent stared at her, a profound shift occurring in his expression. He realized then that the shy, curvy girl from Lombard’s wasn't a vulnerability at all. She was his anchor, and he would burn the entire city to the ground before he let anyone take her away from him.
