Chapter 5 - THE CITADEL BESIEGED

The confrontation with Salvatore Luchesi was the catalyst for an all-out turf war. Within forty-eight hours, Moretti warehouses on the shipping docks were hit, and two of Vincent’s primary distribution routes were ambushed. The fragile peace that had existed between the north and south sides of Chicago was shattered, and the city felt like a powder keg waiting for a spark.

Vincent immediately locked down Lily’s security. She was no longer allowed to leave the Gold Coast penthouse without a four-man escort, and her work for the trust was restricted to secure remote communications.

Lily hated the isolation, but she understood the stakes. Every time she watched the evening news and saw reports of "gangland shootings" in the industrial districts, her stomach twisted into painful knots. She wasn't worried about herself; she was terrified for Vincent.

One rainy Tuesday midnight, Vincent returned to the penthouse. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, a dark smudge of oil—or perhaps something worse—staining the sleeve of his white shirt.

Lily was waiting for him in the living room, curled up on the sofa with a blanket. The moment he walked through the door, she stood up and hurried to him, her silk pajamas whispering against the floor.

"Vincent," she breathed, wrapping her arms around his waist.

Vincent buried his face in her thick brown curls, holding her so tightly she could feel the frantic, heavy thud of his heartbeat. "You shouldn't be awake, Lily. It’s late."

"I can't sleep when you're out there," she whispered, pulling back slightly to look at his face. She reached up, her soft fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "Tell me the truth. How bad is it?"

Vincent sighed, a sound of profound weariness escaping his lips. He guided her back to the sofa, sitting down beside her but keeping his hand firmly wrapped around hers.

"Luchesi has formed an alliance with an eastern syndicate," Vincent revealed, his gray eyes fixed on the rain-streaked window. "They are trying to squeeze us out of the port authority. They think that by attacking my businesses, they can force me to negotiate a surrender."

"Will you?" Lily asked softly.

Vincent let out a cold, sharp laugh. "The Moretti family does not surrender, Lily. But more importantly... Salvatore made a comment to his captains yesterday. He knows you are staying here. He knows what your father did for Thomas. He thinks you are my Achilles' heel."

Lily leaned into his side, her lush, soft body a warm contrast to his rigid tension. "Am I, Vincent? Am I your weakness?"

Vincent turned his head, his eyes burning with an intensity that made Lily’s breath catch in her throat. He reached out, his large hand cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing her lower lip.

"You are not my weakness, Lily," he murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You are the only thing in this miserable world that makes me want to be strong. Before I found you, I was just surviving. Running the family, keeping the peace, waiting for the end. But now... I have a debt of honor to your father, and a debt of love to you. I will not let them touch you."

He leaned in, and for the first time, his lips met hers.

The kiss was not gentle, but it was desperate, filled with the terrifying reality of the war outside and the absolute certainty of the passion between them. Lily opened up to him instantly, her arms wrapping around his neck, pulling him closer until there was no space left between her soft curves and his hard, powerful frame.

When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily, their eyes locked in the dim light of the penthouse.

"Stay here tomorrow," Vincent ordered softly, his voice thick. "No matter what you hear on the news. The penthouse is a citadel, Lily. Marco and Joey have thirty men downstairs. You are safe."

"Promise me you'll come back," she pleaded, her fingers gripping his sweater.

May you like

"I will always come back to you, Lily," he promised, kissing her forehead. "Always."

But as Vincent left the apartment an hour later, the rain outside turned into a torrential downpour, masking the sound of three unmarked black vans pulling up to the curb two blocks away from the Gold Coast high-rise. The citadel was about to be besieged, and the snakes were already inside the gates.
