Chapter 7 - THE PURGE OF CHICAGO

The death of Salvatore Luchesi was the definitive turning point in the war. With their underboss gone and their alliance with the eastern syndicate exposed as a failure, the south-side outfit collapsed into internal chaos. Vincent Moretti did not give them time to reorganize.

Over the next two weeks, the Moretti family executed a ruthless, systematic purge of every corrupt element within the city’s underworld. Warehouses were seized, crooked politicians who had accepted Luchesi’s bribes were exposed, and the remnants of the rival gang were given a simple choice: swear fealty to the Moretti name or leave Chicago in a pine box.

Vincent handled the business with a cold, mechanical efficiency, but the moment his work was done for the day, he returned straight to Lily.

They had moved to a historic estate in the exclusive suburb of Lake Forest—a massive, gated property surrounded by ancient oaks and iron fences that could withstand a small army. Here, away from the concrete and neon of the city, Lily could breathe.

Marco and Joey survived the attack on the penthouse, though both were sidelined with heavy bandages and months of physical therapy. They sat on the sunporch of the new estate, drinking coffee that Lily had brewed for them herself.

"You have a mean headbutt, Miss Harper," Marco grunted, a rare, genuine smile cracking his scarred face as he patted his bandaged shoulder. "Joey owes me fifty bucks. He thought you’d faint."

"I told you, she’s Arthur’s girl," Joey said, shaking his head. "They don't faint."

Lily laughed, sitting down across from them in a simple blue sundress that complemented her bright skin and rich brown curls. "I was terrified, Marco. I just didn't want him to take me away from Vincent."

The door to the sunporch opened, and Vincent walked in. He had discarded his corporate suit for a casual linen shirt, his gray eyes softening the instant they landed on Lily. He walked to her chair, bending down to press a deep, lingering kiss to her lips in front of his men, completely uncaring of his fierce reputation.

"The district attorney signed the final non-prosecution agreement this morning," Vincent announced, sitting on the arm of her chair and wrapping a large hand around her waist. "The Luchesi assets have been legally seized under civil forfeiture and transferred into a public trust. The city is clean, Lily. The war is officially over."

"And the foundation?" Lily asked, looking up at him.

"The Harper-Moretti Trust has just received a twelve-million-dollar anonymous donation from a liquidated real estate portfolio in the south side," Vincent smiled, his gray eyes crinkling. "You have a lot of work to do, Director Harper. There are forty-two new scholarship applications on your desk."

Lily smiled, a deep, profound sense of accomplishment washing over her. She had taken her father’s legacy of sacrifice and turned it into a beacon of hope for hundreds of families across the state. She was no longer the girl running from debt; she was the architect of a new future.

That evening, Vincent took her for a walk through the estate’s private gardens. The summer air was warm, filled with the scent of blooming roses and wet grass.

They reached a stone bench overlooking a small, clear pond. Vincent stopped, turning her to face him, his hands resting on her full, soft hips.

"Lily," he said, his voice unusually nervous. "Six years ago, your father gave my brother a second chance at life. And three months ago, you dropped a silver watch onto my shoe and gave me a reason to actually live that life."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box. When he opened it, a flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring caught the twilight sun, surrounded by a delicate band of silver shaped like intertwining hawk wings.

"I am a man with a dark past, Lily, and my name carries a heavy weight," Vincent said, looking directly into her eyes with a raw, beautiful vulnerability. "But I swear to you, for the rest of my days, I will protect you, I will cherish you, and I will love you with everything I have. Will you marry me?"

May you like

Lily looked at the ring, then up at the man who had torn down the city's predators just to keep her warm. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, her lush body pressing into his chest as she laughed through her tears.

"Yes, Vincent," she whispered into his ear. "Yes, a thousand times yes."
