Chapter 2: The Inquiry of the Willow

Chapter 2: The Inquiry of the Willow

The heavy, sound-dampening oak door of Judge Nathaniel Sterling’s private chambers clicked shut, instantly sealing out the frantic murmurs of the crowded courthouse hallway. Inside, the room smelled of old leather, beeswax, and the cold, unyielding weight of absolute authority.

Judge Sterling did not walk behind his massive mahogany desk. Instead, he stood by the high arched window, his hands clasped behind his back, his silver hair catching the gray Chicago skyline. The atmosphere was so tense that Grant Holloway’s expensive leather shoes sounded like gunshots against the hardwood floor as he shifted his weight.

"Sit down," Judge Sterling said.

The command was quiet, yet it carried a force that left no room for negotiation.

Evelyn sat carefully in one of the deep leather armchairs, her hand instinctively resting on her abdomen. Denise Walker sat tightly beside her, her briefcase resting on her knees like a shield. Across the rug, Grant and Sloan remained standing for a fraction of a second before Grant pulled Sloan down into the adjacent chairs. Sloan looked entirely out of place now, her designer ivory suit suddenly looking like a fragile costume under the judge's piercing gaze.

"Your Honor," Grant began, his voice adopting the polished, board-of-directors cadence he used to smooth over corporate irregularities. "I must insist that what happened in the hallway was an unfortunate emotional escalation. My family is prepared to make a substantial contribution to any court-appointed charity to settle the administrative disturbance. But we must proceed with the asset division hearing. The Holloway Foods restructuring cannot be delayed by—"

"Mr. Holloway," Judge Sterling interrupted, turning around slowly. His eyes were not on Grant. They were locked entirely on the base of Evelyn’s throat, where the small gold willow branch pendant rested against her collarbone. "If you speak one more word about your corporate assets before I address the physical assault of a pregnant woman in my jurisdiction, I will hold you in immediate contempt and have the bailiff escort you to a holding cell."

Grant’s mouth snapped shut. A dark, angry flush crept up his neck.

The judge walked over, stopping a mere two feet from Evelyn’s chair. The stern, untouchable jurist looked momentarily exposed, his chest rising and falling with a ragged breath. "Young lady," he said, his voice dropping into a rough, emotional register that startled Denise Walker. "The necklace. Where did you get it?"

Evelyn blinked, her hand rising to shield the small gold branch. "My mother gave it to me, Your Honor. Right before she passed away in a clinic in downstate Illinois, five years ago."

"What was her name?"

"Rose," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling. "Rose Carter. She... she lived a very quiet life. She never told me anything about her family. She only gave me this and told me that the people who made it loved symbols more than they loved courage."

A visible shudder passed through Judge Sterling’s broad shoulders. He closed his eyes for three long seconds, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of his desk. When he opened his eyes, the transformation was terrifying. The calm, impartial magistrate was gone; in his place stood the patriarch of Sterling Harbor Holdings, a man who had just realized that the past he had buried thirty years ago had just walked through his door bleeding.

"Rose," the judge murmured, his voice thick with a decades-old grief. "She kept it."

"Your Honor?" Grant cut in, his impatience overriding his caution. "What does my wife’s cheap family jewelry have to do with this case? This is a straightforward marital dispute. Evelyn signed a prenuptial agreement, and she is attempting to bypass the asset caps by playing the victim."

"Cheap?" Judge Sterling’s gaze snapped to Grant, flashing with a lethal, predatory light. "This pendant was commissioned by my father in 1988 from a jeweler in Geneva. There are only two in existence. One belongs to my sister. The other was placed around the neck of Rose Carter when my family forced her out of Chicago because she refused to let the Sterling name dictate how she raised her child."

The room fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence.

Denise Walker’s jaw dropped. She looked from the judge’s sharp, aristocratic profile to Evelyn’s face, suddenly seeing the undeniable structural resemblance—the high cheekbones, the deep-set, intelligent dark eyes, the stubborn set of the jaw.

Sloan Pierce let out a small, choked gasp, her manicured fingers digging into Grant’s arm. Grant stared at the judge, his mind frantically trying to calculate the shifting tectonic plates of the city's wealth. If Evelyn was connected to the Sterling dynasty, the Holloway Foods empire wasn't the biggest fish in the pond anymore—they were bait.

"Judge Sterling," Grant stammered, the arrogance evaporating from his voice. "I... we didn't know. The background checks we ran when we married—"

"You ran background checks on your wife to ensure she had no protection," Judge Sterling hissed, stepping toward Grant until the younger billionaire shrunk back into his seat. "You systematically stripped her of her credit cards, isolated her from her legal counsel, and allowed your mistress to strike her in a public court. You thought she was a nobody from nowhere."

The judge walked back to his desk, slamming his hand onto a red button beneath the ledger. Within seconds, two armed state bailiffs pushed through the doors.

"Your Honor?" Grant cried, standing up.

"Captain," Judge Sterling said to the lead bailiff, his voice ringing with a terrible clarity. "Take Ms. Sloan Pierce into immediate custody for aggravated battery of a pregnant victim on state property. Set her bail at five hundred thousand dollars, cash only. And notify the district attorney that I am personally reviewing the surveillance footage from the hallway."

"Nathaniel, you can't do this!" Sloan shrieked as the bailiffs grabbed her upper arms, her polished composure completely shattering into ugly, panicked screams. "Grant! Do something! Tell him who we are!"

But Grant didn't move. He stood paralyzed as his mistress was dragged out of the chambers, her designer heels dragging against the wood.

Judge Sterling turned back to Evelyn, his expression softening into something raw and heavy with remorse. He extended a trembling hand toward her, but stopped himself, dropping it back to his side.

"Ms. Walker," the judge said to Denise, though his eyes never left Evelyn. "This court is issuing an immediate, unassailable temporary protective order for your client. Furthermore, all proceedings regarding the Holloway-Carter divorce are suspended for forty-eight hours pending a full, independent financial audit of the Holloway Group’s domestic and offshore holdings, to be conducted by the Sterling Harbor corporate compliance team."

Grant’s face turned the color of ash. "An audit? You don't have the authority to audit my family’s private holdings without a federal warrant!"

"I am the administrative judge of this circuit, Mr. Holloway," Nathaniel Sterling said, leaning over his desk, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper. "And you are about to discover exactly how much authority I have when someone hurts my blood."
