Chapter 5: The Reckoning in Courtroom 14B
The atmosphere inside Courtroom 14B was entirely different from the quiet, private hearings Grant Holloway had attempted to engineer. The gallery was packed to capacity with corporate journalists, financial analysts, and representatives from every major news outlet in the Midwest.
The heavy wood-paneled walls seemed to vibrate with the sheer scale of the drama unfolding within the bar. Grant Holloway sat at the defense table, flanked by four high-priced white-collar criminal attorneys who looked grim, their eyes fixed on the stacks of federal documentation piled high on the state's side of the room.
Harrison Holloway, the elderly, arrogant patriarch of the family empire, sat behind his son, his gold-headed cane trembling against the linoleum floor as he stared at the empty bench.
The side door opened, and the bailiff’s voice rang through the room: "All rise for the Administrative Judge of the Circuit Court, the Honorable Nathaniel Sterling."
The entire room stood in unison as Nathaniel stepped onto the dais. He wore his black judicial robes, his expression completely devoid of personal bias, carrying only the absolute, cold majesty of the law. He did not look at the gallery, nor at his daughter, who sat at the plaintiff’s table beside Denise Walker, looking calm, elegant, and entirely at peace.
"Please be seated," Judge Sterling said, his voice echoing through the silent chamber. He adjusted his glasses, looking down at the legal filings in front of him. "We are here for the final disposition of the matter of Holloway v. Carter. I have reviewed the supplementary filings from the federal trade compliance auditors, as well as the certified deposition from Ms. Sloan Pierce."
Grant’s lead attorney stood up slowly. "Your Honor, before the court rules, my client wishes to enter a full, unrestricted withdrawal of his initial marital asset defense. We are prepared to offer Ms. Carter a global settlement consisting of forty percent of the Holloway Foods non-voting equity, alongside full ownership of the residential properties in Chicago and Lake Geneva, in exchange for the immediate dismissal of the secondary civil infrastructure claims filed by Sterling Harbor."
The gallery gasped, the reporters frantically typing into their digital pads. It was a complete, unconditional surrender—an offer that would instantly make Evelyn one of the wealthiest independent women in the state.
Denise Walker stood up from the plaintiff’s table, her voice clear and resonant. "The plaintiff rejects the settlement, Your Honor."
The courtroom went dead silent. Grant turned his head sharply, his face contorted in a mixture of rage and confusion. "Evelyn, are you insane?" he shouted, disregarding his attorney’s frantic warning hand. "That’s more money than you could spend in three lifetimes! You were a waitress when I met you!"
Slam!
The sound of Judge Sterling’s gavel cracked through the room like a lightning bolt, silencing Grant instantly.
"Mr. Holloway, one more disruption from your table and I will have you removed and sentenced for immediate contempt," Judge Sterling said, his voice dropping into a register that made the seasoned attorneys in the front row flinch. "Ms. Walker, please state the plaintiff's counter-motion."
"Your Honor," Denise said, sliding a certified corporate registry to the clerk. "We are not asking for a percentage of the Holloway empire. We are notifying the court that as of 8:00 AM today, the hostile takeover initiated by Sterling Harbor Holdings has been finalized. Harrison Holloway and Grant Holloway have been formally stripped of their executive voting authority by a three-fourths majority of the independent board members, who voted to protect the company from federal liquidation."
Denise turned to look at Grant, her eyes flashing with a ruthless, professional triumph. "Evelyn Carter does not need a settlement from the Holloway family, Your Honor. Because as the sole heir to the Sterling Harbor estate and the newly appointed Chairperson of the restructured Holloway-Sterling Logistics Group, she already owns the building you're sitting in, the distribution lines your food travels on, and the very chair you're currently occupying."
Grant’s jaw dropped, his hands sliding off the defense table as if the wood had suddenly turned to fire. He looked back at his father, but Harrison Holloway had already dropped his head into his hands, his gold cane rolling uselessly across the floorboards.
"The court notes the corporate transition," Judge Sterling said, his face an unreadable mask of judicial precision as he picked up his pen. "Furthermore, regarding the marital status: the prenuptial agreement is hereby declared null and void due to systemic fraudulent concealment of assets by the defendant. The divorce is granted unconditionally. Full legal and physical custody of the unborn child is awarded exclusively to Evelyn Carter. Mr. Holloway is granted zero visitation rights pending the outcome of his upcoming federal embezzlement trial."
The judge signed the decree with a single, sharp stroke of his pen, then raised his eyes to look at Grant one final time.

"This court is adjourned," Judge Sterling said.
As the gavel came down for the last time, four federal marshals stepped through the rear doors of the courtroom, their leather holsters creaking loudly as they approached the defense table to place Grant Holloway in handcuffs. Evelyn stood up slowly, never looking back at the man who had tried to erase her, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright, open light of the grand rotunda.
