Chapter 2: The Return of the King

Chapter 2: The Return of the King

The silence that followed Ricardo Salazar’s entrance was heavy enough to crush the breath from a man's lungs. The towering, silver-haired patriarch of the Salazar empire stepped fully into the grand foyer, flanked by four stone-faced men in sharp, identical charcoal suits. His tailored coat was unbuttoned, revealing a posture that held the weight of absolute authority. His eyes—dark, calculating, and currently radiating a lethal, subterranean fury—were locked entirely on Santiago Rivas.

Santiago stood frozen, his hand still partially raised in mid-air, a pathetic remnant of the threat he had been making just seconds prior. The whiskey glass in his other hand began to tremble, the ice cubes rattling a nervous rhythm against the crystal.

"Señor... Señor Salazar," Santiago stammered, his polished billionaire persona evaporating like mist in a furnace. He cleared his throat, desperately trying to summon the charming mask that usually worked on politicians and international investors. "I... I don't understand. What are you doing in my home? And what do you mean by... your daughter?"

Ricardo didn't answer him. He didn't even look at him as a human being. Instead, his gaze dropped to the floor where Valeria was kneeling, her hands desperately cradling her eight-month-pregnant belly. In an instant, the terrifying titan of the business world transformed into a heartbroken father. Ricardo moved with a speed that defied his age, dropping to his knees on the cold marble beside her.

"Valeria," Ricardo whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing pain he had kept buried for two long years. He reached out, his massive, calloused hands trembling violently as he gently cupped her face. "My beautiful girl. My sweet Valeria. Look at me. Daddy’s here. I’m so sorry... God, I’m so sorry I let you hide from me."

Valeria let out a ragged, choked sob, the tears she had held back for weeks finally bursting through her defenses. She leaned her forehead against her father’s shoulder, her shoulders shaking violently. "Daddy... they were going to take my baby. They have papers... they were going to lock me away..."

"Never," Ricardo hissed, his grip tightening as he shielded her frail, pregnant frame with his own body. He looked up at Mrs. Yvette’s equivalent in this house—his own security detail—and barked a sharp command. "Get the medical team inside! Now!"

Two female paramedics, who had been waiting in an armored vehicle outside, rushed through the front door with a specialized stretcher. They gently began to assess Valeria, checking her blood pressure and heart rate, ensuring the immense stress hadn't triggered premature labor.

Up on the staircase, Beatriz Rivas finally found her voice, though her aristocratic hand shook so much that a few drops of red wine spilled over the rim of her glass, staining the pristine white steps like blood. "This is an outrage! You cannot simply break into a Rivas estate with armed men! Ricardo Salazar or not, there are laws in Mexico City! Valeria is an orphan! She is a Mendoza! She has no relation to you!"

Ricardo slowly rose to his feet, turning his full, terrifying height toward the staircase. The temperature in the room dropped to absolute zero.

"Mendoza was her mother’s maiden name, you old viper," Ricardo said, his voice a dead, vibrating frequency that made Beatriz’s knees buckle. "Valeria went to great lengths to hide her true lineage because she wanted a man to love her for who she was, not for the billions attached to the Salazar name. And you... you and your pathetic excuse for a son treated her like an animal because you thought she had no one to fight for her."

Santiago stepped backward, his face completely drained of color. "No... no, this is a mistake. Valeria, tell him! I love you! We had a domestic disagreement, that's all! Every marriage has its moments—"

"A domestic disagreement?"

A sharp, sophisticated voice cut through the foyer as a woman in a tailored navy pantsuit walked into the mansion, holding a secure encrypted tablet. It was Sofia Vance, the top corporate and criminal attorney in the country, retained by the Salazar family.

"Mr. Rivas," Sofia said, her voice filled with professional disdain. "For the past three weeks, your wife has been streaming every single interaction inside this house via a secure, hidden camera embedded in the antique silver clock in the living room. We have high-definition footage of you raising your hand to a woman who is eight months pregnant. We have audio of your mother, Beatriz Rivas, instructing you to 'not leave bruises anyone can photograph' for the gala. And we have copies of the forged psychiatric evaluations you locked in your office safe."

Santiago’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled it out with clumsy, panicked fingers. A text message from his chief financial officer flashed across the screen: “Sir! The Salazar Group just dumped all thirty percent of their holdings in our primary infrastructure project. The banks are panicking. The board is calling an emergency meeting. We are facing an immediate margin call of four hundred million dollars.”

"You thought you were a billionaire, Santiago," Ricardo said, taking a step toward him, his eyes burning with an unquenchable vengeance. "But you forgot who authorized the low-interest loans that kept your father’s legacy afloat after the 2022 market crash. I own your debt. I own your suppliers. And by tomorrow morning, I will own the very ground you are standing on."

"Santiago!" Beatriz shrieked from the stairs, dropping her wine glass completely. The crystal shattered on the marble, the red liquid pooling around her designer heels. "Do something! Call the police! Call the ministers!"

"The ministers won't save him, Beatriz," Sofia Vance smiled coldly, tapping her tablet. "The federal police are already waiting at the gates. We aren't just filing for a divorce. We are filing charges for aggravated domestic assault, corporate extortion, and conspiracy to commit human trafficking via illegal medical confinement."

As the paramedics carefully wheeled Valeria out on the stretcher, she looked back at Santiago one last time. He looked small. Pathetic. A hollow man stripped of the stolen power he had used to terrorize her.

"Take them," Ricardo commanded his security team, pointing at Santiago and Beatriz. "Ensure they don't leave this house until the federal authorities cross the threshold. I have a daughter to take care of."
