Chapter 4: The House of Cards Collapses

The trial of Santiago and Beatriz Rivas didn't take place in a quiet courtroom; it was an execution broadcasted across every news network in the country. For decades, the high society of Mexico City had looked down on those they deemed beneath them, using their wealth to bury their sins. But the Salazars weren't just high society—they were the architects of the system itself.

Santiago sat in the defendant's box, looking completely unrecognizable. The pristine, bespoke suits he used to flaunt on magazine covers were replaced by a standard, ill-fitting beige prison uniform. His hair was unkempt, his face hollow from weeks of sleepless nights inside the crowded penitentiary. Beside him, Beatriz sat with her head bowed, her hands trembling as the prosecution played the unedited, high-definition audio and video from the silver clock.

"You are nothing. You own nothing. You'll do exactly what I tell you." Santiago’s recorded voice boomed through the courtroom speakers, cold, arrogant, and terrifying.

Then came Beatriz’s voice, lazy and dripping with venom: "Don't leave bruises anyone can photograph. The foundation gala is tomorrow."

The public gallery, filled with journalists and human rights advocates, erupted into furious murmurs. The judge, a stern woman with a reputation for absolute integrity, slammed her gavel down, her eyes burning with disgust as she looked at the defendants.

Valeria did not attend the trial in person; her doctors had strictly forbidden any unnecessary stress as she reached her ninth month of pregnancy. But she watched the live feed from her private suite at the Salazar estate, her hand resting securely in her father’s grasp.

Santiago’s high-priced defense attorney stood up, his voice lacking any real confidence. "Your Honor, my client was under immense corporate stress. The marriage was volatile, and while his actions are deeply regrettable, we argue that the psychological evaluations were intended as a private family intervention, not a conspiracy to kidnap—"

"Sufficient," the judge cut him off with a single, sharp wave of her hand. "The court has reviewed the evidence. The digital forensics team has verified that the psychiatric documents were backdated and forged using bribes paid directly to a corrupt medical official, who has already pled guilty in a separate proceeding. This was not a family intervention. This was a calculated, malicious attempt to strip a pregnant mother of her legal rights, her child, and her freedom."

The judge turned her gaze to Santiago, her voice ringing with absolute finality. "Santiago Rivas, you have used your wealth as a weapon to terrorize the woman you swore to protect. You showed no mercy to your wife, and you showed a complete disregard for the life of your unborn child. This court sentences you to fourteen years in a maximum-security prison for aggravated domestic violence, corporate forgery, and attempted extortion, with no possibility of early parole."

Santiago collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his hands as a low, pathetic wail escaped his lips.

"Beatriz Rivas," the judge continued, her tone dropping to an even colder register. "For your complicity, your active encouragement of violence, and your direct involvement in the conspiracy to commit illegal medical confinement, you are sentenced to eight years in the Santa Martha Acatitla women’s penitentiary."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to slam the handcuffs around their wrists and lead them away to the transport vans, Valeria slowly reached over and pressed the remote, turning the television screen to black.

The silence in the room was beautiful.

"It's over, Valeria," Ricardo said softly, leaning over to kiss his daughter’s forehead. "The monsters are locked away. The house of cards has fallen."

Valeria looked down at her belly, feeling a sudden, sharp, yet profoundly welcome movement from within. She smiled, a tear of pure relief slipping down her cheek. "He knows, Daddy. He knows we’re finally safe."
