Chapter 3: The Sanctuary of the New Dawn

Chapter 3: The Sanctuary of the New Dawn

The private wing of the ABC Medical Center in Santa Fe was locked down tighter than a military base. Ricardo Salazar had purchased the entire floor for the duration of his daughter’s stay, placing his personal, heavily armed security personnel at every entrance, elevator, and stairwell. The media, tipped off by the sudden collapse of the Rivas corporate stock, were swarming the hospital gates downstairs, but up here, the air was peaceful, filled with the soft hum of medical monitors and the scent of fresh white lilies.
Valeria lay in the luxurious hospital bed, a clean, silk gown replacing the stained clothes of her old life. An IV drip was connected to her arm, pumping mild sedatives and nutrients into her exhausted system. Her skin was still pale, but the constant, terrifying tension that had locked her muscles for two years was finally beginning to melt away.
The door pushed open quietly, and Ricardo walked in, carrying a small bowl of fresh fruit. The ruthless billionaire tycoon who had spent the morning systematically destroying the Rivas banking network was gone; he looked simply like a tired, devoted father.
"How is my grandson doing?" Ricardo asked softly, sitting in the leather armchair beside her bed and gently taking her hand.
"He's stubborn, just like his grandfather," Valeria offered a weak, genuine smile, her hand resting over her belly. "The doctors said the contractions have stopped completely. He’s safe. We just need to keep him inside for another three weeks until he's full term."
Ricardo closed his eyes, a deep, shuddering sigh escaping his chest. He pressed her hand against his cheek, his voice thick with emotion. "When you disappeared two years ago, Valeria... when you changed your name and told me you wanted to build a life away from the Salazar shadow... I thought I was respecting your independence. If I had known... if I had looked closer..."
"It wasn't your fault, Daddy," Valeria interrupted gently, her eyes filling with tears. "I was naive. I wanted to believe that someone could love just me. Santiago was so charming at first. He volunteered at the school, he brought flowers... I didn't realize it was all a calculated play to find a woman he thought he could isolate and control. By the time I realized who he truly was, I was pregnant, and he had threatened to use his money to take my baby away forever. I felt so ashamed for making such a terrible mistake that I couldn't bring myself to call you."
"Shame belongs to the wicked, my love, not to the victim," Ricardo said, his voice hardening as the warmth in his eyes flared back into a protective fire. "You have nothing to be ashamed of. You fought back. The trap you set with that silver clock was brilliant. Sofia tells me the district attorney is ecstatic. They’ve wanted a piece of the Rivas family’s corrupt political connections for a decade, and you just handed them a mountain of undeniable federal evidence."
Just then, Sofia Vance stepped into the room, her expression sharp and victorious. She bowed her head respectfully to Ricardo before addressing Valeria.
"An update from the corporate battleground, Mrs. Salaz—pardon me, Ms. Mendoza, soon to be legally Salazar again," Sofia corrected with a smile. "Santiago tried to file for an emergency restructuring of his main holding company this morning to protect his personal assets. I personally blocked the motion in federal court using the active criminal investigation status. As of three hours ago, Rivas Enterprises has officially entered technical default. The board of directors has mutinied. They have officially stripped Santiago of his CEO title and are currently begging your father for a buyout to save their own pensions."
Valeria looked out the window at the distant mountains surrounding the valley of Mexico City. "And Santiago himself?"
"He spent the afternoon in a holding cell at the Reclusorio Norte," Sofia replied flatly. "His mother, Beatriz, attempted to use their family’s private jet to flee to Madrid this morning. My team intercepted her at the private terminal with a federal flight-risk warrant. She is currently occupying the cell next to her son. The judge has denied bail for both of them, citing the severe nature of the domestic abuse and the evidence of planned kidnapping."

Valeria took a deep breath, the phantom weight of Santiago’s raised hand finally evaporating from her mind. She turned to her father, her eyes clear and resolute. "Daddy, I don't want their money. I don't want a single peso from the Rivas estate. But I want their name completely eradicated from my son's future."
"Consider it done," Ricardo said, standing up and smoothing his suit jacket. "The legal paperwork to ensure your son carries the Salazar name exclusively was signed an hour ago. Tomorrow, the Rivas foundation gala they were boasting about will still happen. But the banners won't say Rivas. They will say Salazar. And every single charity they used to launder their reputation will now be funded by the very empire that brought them down."
