Chapter 8 - The Ghost of Retribution

Just when life seemed to have settled into a perfect rhythm, the snake of the past reared its head for one final, desperate strike.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. Daniel was away at a critical board meeting to finalize the dissolution of the Saavedra contracts, and most of the mansion staff had been given the afternoon off to attend a local festival, leaving only Don Eusebio and a young kitchen maid on the property.
Marisol was in the upstairs library, reading a story to Camila, when the lights suddenly flickered and went out. The grand house fell into an eerie darkness, illuminated only by the gray light of an approaching afternoon storm.
“Mommy?” Camila whispered, hugging her stuffed bunny tightly. “The lights are broken.”
“It’s okay, sweetie. Stay here, I’ll find Don Eusebio and get a flashlight,” Marisol said, her heart accelerating slightly. A strange instinct, honed by years of surviving in harsh conditions, warned her that something was wrong.
As she stepped out onto the grand corridor, she heard a muffled thud from the foyer below. She crept to the marble balustrade and looked down.
Her breath caught in her throat.
Standing in the foyer, dripping with rain and holding a heavy iron tire iron, was Renata Saavedra. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes bloodshot and wild with madness. She had broken through the glass of the side terrace doors. She had lost everything—her reputation, her fortune, her freedom—and she had nothing left to lose.
“Marisol!” Renata screamed into the empty house, her voice cracked and hysterical. “I know you’re here, you miserable cockroach! You ruined my life! You and your bastard child!”
Marisol quickly retreated into the library, locking the heavy oak doors behind her. Her hands shook violently as she grabbed her phone to call Daniel, but there was no signal—the storm had knocked out the local tower.
“Marisol, hide in the closet! Right now! Don't make a sound!” Marisol whispered frantically to Camila, pushing her into the deep walk-in closet behind the bookshelves and covering her with heavy winter coats. “No matter what you hear, do not come out.”
Camila nodded, her eyes wide with terror, clutching her gold button necklace.
A loud CRACK echoed through the hallway. Renata was smashing the doors of the adjacent rooms. She was getting closer.
“You think you’re a lady now?” Renata’s hysterical voice boomed from just outside the library. “You think you can live in my house? Wear my clothes? I’m going to burn this place to the ground with you inside it!”
The library door groaned as Renata slammed the iron bar against the lock. The wood began to splinter. Marisol looked around desperately for a weapon. She grabbed a heavy brass candelabra from the desk, standing her ground in front of the closet.
With a final, violent smash, the library door flew open. Renata stood there, panting, a plastic container of gasoline in her other hand.
“There you are,” Renata hissed, her face contorting into a demonic grin. “The maid who stole my life.”
“You ruined your own life, Renata!” Marisol shouted, holding the candelabra up. “You’re sick! The police are already looking for you!”
“I don't care about the police!” Renata shrieked, splashing the gasoline across the wooden floor and the expensive rugs. “If I can’t have Daniel, and I can’t have this fortune, no one will! You’re going to burn, Marisol! You and that little mistake you call a daughter!”

Renata pulled a lighter from her pocket, flicking the flame to life.
“No!” Marisol screamed, lunging forward to stop her.
