Chapter 9 - The Trial by Fire

Marisol threw herself at Renata just as the lighter dropped onto the gasoline-soaked rug. A wall of bright orange fire instantly erupted between them, cutting off the exit to the hallway.
The heat was instantaneous and suffocating. Black, toxic smoke began to fill the high-ceilinged library.
Renata fell backward, hitting her head against the marble fireplace mantel. The impact knocked her unconscious, her body lying perilously close to the growing flames. Despite the horror of what Renata had just attempted, Marisol couldn't leave a human being to burn alive. She dragged Renata’s heavy, limp body away from the immediate fire toward the open window terrace.
“Camila!” Marisol coughed violently, the thick smoke blinding her. She ran back to the closet, pulling Camila out. The little girl was wheezing, coughing from the smoke.
The library was now a roaring inferno. The exit was completely blocked by falling, burning bookshelves. They were trapped on the third-floor balcony.
Down below in the driveway, tires screeched. Daniel’s car tore through the gates. He had received an automated security alert on his phone when the terrace glass broke.
He jumped out of the car and looked up, his heart stopping as he saw thick black smoke pouring from the library windows. Through the flames, he saw Marisol holding Camila on the balcony.
“Daniel!” Marisol screamed, her voice weak from smoke inhalation.
“Marisol! Jump into the pool! It’s directly below you!” Daniel roared, sprinting toward the rear of the mansion.
But the balcony railing was hot, and the distance was terrifying. Camila was terrified, crying hysterically into her mother’s chest.
“Trust me, mi amor! Trust Uncle Daniel!” Marisol cried. She gripped Camila tightly, closed her eyes, and leaped over the edge just as the library windows shattered outward from the intense heat.
They hit the deep water of the swimming pool with a massive splash.
Instantly, Daniel dove into the water, his strong arms grabbing both of them and pulling them to the surface. He dragged them onto the concrete deck, wrapping them in his arms as fire engines rumbled up the driveway in the distance.
Marisol coughed up water, gasping for air. Daniel held her tightly against his chest, his body shaking with a profound terror he had never felt before.
“I’ve got you. I’ve got you both,” Daniel sobbed openly, kissing Marisol’s forehead, then kissing Camila’s wet hair. “You’re safe. I’m so sorry I wasn't here. I almost lost you...”
Marisol looked up into his eyes, seeing the raw, naked love and devotion there. In that moment of near-death, all doubts melted away. She knew he loved them—not out of obligation to his dead brother, but because they had become his entire world.

Emergency crews rushed into the backyard. Firefighters ran up into the house, eventually rescuing an unconscious Renata, who would survive only to face immediate transfer to a high-security prison psychiatric ward for attempted murder and arson.
But Daniel didn't look back at the burning mansion. He kept his arms wrapped around the former maid and the little girl who held the gold button, knowing that as long as they were alive, his true home was safe.
