Chapter 1: The Ledger of Deceit

Chapter 1: The Ledger of Deceit

Alejandro’s heart hammered against his ribs, a sickening mix of profound guilt and white-hot fury. He gathered all four of his daughters into his arms, feeling how tragically light they were beneath their thin nightgowns. Their skin was ice-cold.

"Listen to me," Alejandro whispered, his voice cracking as he forced back tears. "You will never, ever have to eat moldy bread again. You are beautiful, you are perfect, and Daddy is home."

He carried them upstairs himself, avoiding the main hall where the raucous music still blared. He wrapped them in the thickest, warmest blankets he could find, locked them safely in his master bedroom, and called his trusted personal physician, Dr. Silva, ordering him to come immediately through the back gate. He also made a second call to a premium catering service, demanding hot soup, fresh bread, and warm milk within thirty minutes, offering triple the price for Christmas Eve delivery.

Once his daughters were temporarily safe and waiting for food, Alejandro walked into Jimena’s private dressing room. If she was starving his daughters while draped in new diamonds, the monthly allowance of $50,000 he had been wiring for "household expenses and top-tier childcare" was going elsewhere.

He began searching. He tore through her designer bags, her jewelry boxes, and finally, he noticed a loose floorboard beneath her vanity. Prying it open, he found a heavy steel lockbox. Alejandro didn't waste time looking for a key; he took a heavy iron fire poker from the hallway and smashed the lock with brutal, channeled rage.

Inside the box lay the dark truth.

There were no receipts for tutors, organic groceries, or winter clothes for the quadruplets. Instead, Alejandro found a hidden ledger, several burner phones, and a stack of legal documents. As he flipped through the ledger, the reality of Jimena’s betrayal unfolded. She hadn't just been throwing parties; she had stopped paying the mansion’s staff months ago, threatening them with deportation or legal ruin if they spoke to Alejandro. The "nanny" he thought he hired had been fired on day one.

Worse, the legal documents were draft agreements to transfer ownership of Alejandro’s Monterrey logistics branches. Jimena, with the help of a corrupt lawyer named Ernesto, had been forging Alejandro’s signature on corporate documents while he was isolated working in the fields. She was systematically draining his business assets to fund a massive gambling debt and an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

But the most chilling discovery was a medical report hidden at the bottom. It was a psychological evaluation of the quadruplets, stamped by a fraudulent clinic. Jimena was preparing to declare Valeria, Camila, Regina, and Sofía "mentally unfit and emotionally unstable" due to the phantom trauma of losing their biological mother. Her ultimate plan was to have them permanently institutionalized in a private facility out of state, ensuring they would never inherit a single dime of the Santillán estate, leaving everything to her.

The moldy bread wasn't just neglect. It was a deliberate, cruel tactic to weaken them, to break their spirits until they looked and acted like the broken children she needed them to be for the courts.

Alejandro clutched the papers, his knuckles turning white. The music downstairs seemed to grow louder, mocking his pain. His phone buzzed; it was a text from an unknown number on one of Jimena’s burner phones: “The papers are ready for the Christmas transfer, my love. Once he signs the holiday bonus authorizations, the Monterrey branch is ours. Let's celebrate tonight.”

Alejandro closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. The grief evaporated, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve. Jimena thought she was playing a game of chess with a blind man. She didn't know the blind man had just regained his sight.
