Chapter 4: The Long Winter to Healing

Chapter 4: The Long Winter to Healing

The months following that fateful Christmas Eve were a grueling journey of reconstruction, both for Alejandro’s business and his family. The legal battle against Jimena and Ernesto was swift and brutal. With the mountain of evidence Alejandro provided—including the hidden ledger, bank statements, and the definitive medical reports from Dr. Silva—the court denied Jimena bail. She and Ernesto were sentenced to fifteen years in a maximum-security prison for corporate fraud and attempted child institutionalization.

But winning the legal war was the easy part. The real battle was fought inside the quiet walls of the Las Lomas mansion, which Alejandro completely remodeled. He fired the entire past agency and personally interviewed and hired a team of compassionate, elderly nannies and world-class child psychologists. He stepped down as the active CEO of his Monterrey operations, appointing a trusted partner to handle the daily grind so he could work entirely from home.

The psychological scars on the girls ran deep. For the first two months, the quadruplets exhibited severe food insecurity. Alejandro would often find Regina and Sofía hiding crackers and fruit under their pillows, terrified that the food would vanish if they didn't store it.

One evening in late February, Alejandro walked into their playroom and found Sofía crying because she had accidentally dropped a glass of milk on the rug. She was trembling, curled into a ball, waiting for a blow or a punishment that Jimena would have surely inflicted.

Alejandro didn't yell. He didn't even call a maid. He sat down on the floor right in the puddle of milk, ruining his expensive trousers, and pulled Sofía into his lap.

"It's just milk, Sofi," he said gently, wiping her tears. "Look, Daddy is messy too." He deliberately took a napkin and dipped it in the milk, making a silly face.

For the first time in months, a tiny, genuine giggle escaped Sofía’s lips. Valeria, Camila, and Regina watched from the doorway, their defensive walls cracking just a little bit more. Slowly, day by day, through patience, endless reassurance, and unconditional love, the fear began to melt away.

Alejandro made it a daily ritual to cook breakfast with them. They learned that food was a source of joy and health, not a reward for being "pretty" or a weapon used to control them. Their cheeks regained their natural rosy color, their thin frames filled out with healthy growth, and the dark rooms of the mansion were permanently flooded with warm sunlight and the sound of children's laughter.

Alejandro also established the Santillán Children’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting children from domestic neglect and hidden abuse, turning the nightmare his daughters endured into a beacon of hope for thousands of other children across the country.
