Chapter 2: The Shadows of Westbridge Academy

Chapter 2: The Shadows of Westbridge Academy

The cool night air of the city hit Elena’s face as she walked out the back door of the restaurant, her uniform shirt slightly damp from the humidity of the kitchen. She walked down the brick alleyway, her sneakers crunching against the gravel. For the first time in three years, her hands weren't shaking from the exhaustion of working double shifts. She felt light. She felt a profound, electric sense of freedom.

But as she reached the end of the alley, a sleek, black luxury sedan pulled up to the curb, its headlights cutting through the darkness. The rear window rolled down smoothly, revealing the profile of Julian Vance.

"Get in, Elena," Julian said, his expression hidden in the shadows of the car’s interior. "We need to talk."

"I have nothing to say to you, Julian, or anyone associated with Chloe," Elena said, continuing to walk down the sidewalk toward the subway station.

"It’s about your father's medical foundation," Julian called out, his words causing Elena to freeze mid-step. Her boots felt suddenly anchored to the concrete.

She turned slowly, her eyes narrowing as she walked back toward the car. "What did you just say?"

"I said, get in. Unless you want the police report Chloe’s father is currently drafting to include details about your family's outstanding debts to the Davenport holding group," Julian said, opening the door from the inside.

Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second before slipping into the leather interior of the vehicle. The door closed with a solid, isolating thud, cutting off the sounds of the city traffic.

"What do you know about my father's foundation?" Elena demanded, her voice tight.

Julian poured himself a glass of sparkling water from the small console bar before looking at her. "Ten years ago, your father, Dr. Robert Carter, was on the verge of patenting a revolutionary neurological rehabilitation protocol. It would have made your family incredibly wealthy and saved thousands of lives. Then, overnight, his laboratory burned down, his records were destroyed, and he was accused of medical malpractice and embezzlement. He suffered a stroke from the stress and has been in a long-term care facility ever since. You’ve been working three jobs to pay his medical bills. Am I correct?"

Tears of old, suppressed grief pricked the corners of Elena’s eyes, but she forced them back down. "The courts ruled it was an accidental electrical fire. My father was cleared of the embezzlement charges, but his reputation was destroyed. Why are you bringing this up now?"

"Because it wasn't an accidental fire, Elena," Julian said, turning a tablet toward her. On the screen was a series of encrypted financial logs from a company called Davenport Global Logistics. "Chloe’s father, Arthur Davenport, was the primary investor in your father's lab. The night of the fire, a wire transfer of two million dollars was made from Arthur's private account to an offshore entity registered under the name of the chief safety inspector who signed off on the 'accidental' cause of the fire."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at the digital numbers, the cold reality of the betrayal washing over her like ice water. "They ruined him... they stole his life's work to bankrupt him."

"Not just to bankrupt him," Julian corrected grimly. "To steal the patent. Tomorrow morning at the City Innovation Summit, Arthur Davenport is unveiling a new medical tech subsidiary. The core technology they are showcasing is your father’s protocol, rebranded under the Davenport name. Chloe is set to be named the Chief Executive Officer of that subsidiary. That's why she was celebrating at the restaurant tonight."

Elena fell back against the leather seat, her mind racing. "And you? You were sitting at that table with her. Why are you telling me this?"

"Because Arthur Davenport tried to fold my family's venture firm into his logistics empire by using fraudulent collateral," Julian said, his eyes glinting with a sharp, corporate venom. "He thought I was too young to notice the discrepancy in his balance sheets. I don't like being played, Elena. And I know that you still have the original, hand-written research journals your father kept at home before the lab burned down. Am I right?"

Elena looked out the window, her jaw clenching. "If I have them, they are a legal secret. Why should I trust you?"

"Because tomorrow, Chloe is going to step onto a stage in front of five hundred international investors," Julian whispered, a slow, dangerous smile forming on his lips. "And I think it’s time the Class President gave a proper introductory speech."
