Chapter 4: The Summit of Exposure

Chapter 4: The Summit of Exposure
The Denver Convention Center was a sea of glass, steel, and high-society arrogance. Banners stretching forty feet high proclaimed the theme of the morning: The New Dawn of Medical Tech: Shaping the Next Decade. The main auditorium was packed with over five hundred investors, journalists, and city officials, all whispering in anticipation of Arthur Davenport’s keynote address.
In the green room behind the main stage, Chloe stood in front of a full-length mirror. She was wearing a pristine emerald-green designer dress—a deliberate choice to match the color of luxury—and a heavy diamond necklace. Her left cheek was covered in a thick layer of professional concealer, completely hiding the mark from the previous night, though her expression remained tight and nervous.

"Are the security guards reinforced at the entrance?" Chloe demanded, turning to her father, Arthur Davenport, a large, silver-haired tycoon who was reviewing his notes on a digital podium. "That psycho waitress from last night... Julian said she might try to cause a scene outside the building."
"Relax, Chloe," Arthur scoffed, not looking up. "The hotel manager confirmed she was fired immediately. If she even steps within a block of this convention center, she’ll be arrested for trespassing and assault. Today is about your future. Once this patent is unveiled, our stock options will triple, and your position as CEO will be secure for life. Don't let a low-class street rat ruin your focus."
"I just hated the way she looked at me," Chloe muttered, her manicured nails digging into her palms. "Like she still thought she was better than me."
At exactly 9:00 AM, the house lights in the main auditorium dimmed. A booming voice echoed over the speakers: "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome the Chairman of Davenport Global Logistics, Mr. Arthur Davenport."
The crowd erupted into applause as Arthur stepped onto the stage, the massive LED screen behind him flashing with high-definition graphics of neurological grids and medical devices.
"Thank you, everyone," Arthur beamed, his voice projecting total, unshakeable authority. "For ten years, my team has worked in absolute secrecy to solve one of the greatest medical challenges of our generation: the permanent repair of spinal cord degradation. Today, through millions of dollars of private research, we are proud to unveil the Davenport Bio-Link Protocol."
As he pressed a button on his remote, a detailed blueprint appeared on the screen.
Suddenly, from the back of the auditorium, the heavy double doors swung open with a resounding, thunderous echo. The light from the hallway poured into the darkened room, catching the silhouettes of two people walking down the center aisle with slow, synchronized steps.
It was Julian Vance and Elena Carter.
Elena wasn't wearing a waitress uniform. She wore a beautifully tailored, dark navy blazer and trousers, her hair pulled back into a crisp, professional bun. She held a thick, leather-bound journal securely against her chest like a shield.
"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur Davenport stopped mid-sentence, his face hardening as he looked down from the stage. "Security! Remove these intruders immediately!"
Four large security guards moved into the aisle, but Julian Vance stepped forward, holding up a certified federal injunction document bearing the golden seal of the State District Court.
"Do not touch her," Julian’s voice boomed through the microphone he had brought from the sound booth. "By order of the Federal Circuit Court, this presentation is officially halted under suspicion of corporate espionage, patent fraud, and arson concealment."
The crowd erupted into a chaotic murmur. Journalists stood up from their seats, their cameras instantly pivoting away from Arthur Davenport to focus on the woman walking calmly toward the stage stairs.

Chloe stepped out from the wings of the stage, her face turning an ash-gray color as she saw Elena approaching. "Elena... you... you can't be here!"
"I belong here, Chloe," Elena said, stepping onto the stage and walking straight to the central podium. She opened her father's leather journal, laying it flat over Arthur’s printed digital notes. "Because the protocol your father is trying to sell today doesn't belong to the Davenport name. It belongs to Dr. Robert Carter—the man you tried to erase ten years ago."
