Chapter 1: The Portrait of a Crime

The red-sealed envelope felt like a block of solid ice in Christopher’s hands. He ignored the freezing water soaking through his clothes from Emma’s drenched body. Wraping his jacket tightly around his shivering eight-year-old daughter, he held her close with one arm while his trembling fingers pulled out the contents of the envelope.

Inside were three things: a faded, blood-stained medical report, a bank transfer receipt totaling five million dollars to a private clinic in Switzerland, and a photograph.

Christopher looked down at the photograph, and the world around him seemed to shatter into jagged pieces.

It was a picture of a woman lying in a hospital bed, surrounded by monitors, her face pale but unmistakably beautiful. It was Lily. Lily Evans—the only woman Christopher had ever truly loved, the woman he was told had tragically abandoned him and their newborn daughter eight years ago for a hefty sum of cash. Christopher had spent nearly a decade nursing a broken heart, believing Lily had sold their love.

But the photograph showed something far more sinister. Lily wasn't abandoning anyone. She was comatose, her head wrapped in heavy medical gauze. Written on the back of the photo in his mother’s elegant, sharp cursive handwriting were the words: "The liability is contained. The child is ours. The mother will not wake up."

Christopher’s breath hitched. His eyes flew to the medical report. It wasn't an illness that had taken Lily. It was a staged car accident, engineered three years ago, right around the time Lily had supposedly "signed" the final relinquishment papers to hand Emma over to the Pierce family completely. The five-million-dollar bank transfer was a recurring payment to a heavily guarded, off-the-grid medical facility in the Swiss Alps, signed directly by Estelle Pierce.

"Sir..." Mrs. Yvette’s voice was barely a whisper, filled with tears. "I found it at the bottom of Miss Juliette’s safe. She was using it to blackmail your mother. Juliette knew that if she ever fell out of favor with Madam Estelle, this secret would destroy the matriarch. They didn't just try to kill Emma today, Mr. Christopher. They destroyed Miss Lily first."

A guttural, animalistic roar tore from Christopher’s throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated agony and rage that echoed off the stone walls of the courtyard. The security guards stepped back in absolute terror. The calm, calculated billionaire businessman was gone. In his place stood a man whose entire life had been built on a foundation of horrific, monstrous lies manufactured by his own blood.

"Daddy... you’re hurting me," Emma whimpered softly, her voice shaking from the cold and fear.

Christopher instantly softened his grip, his heart breaking as he looked down at his daughter. Her eyes, so wide and innocent, were the exact shade of Lily’s. "I'm sorry, my sweet girl. I'm so sorry. Daddy's got you. No one is ever going to hurt you again. I promise you. I promise."

He lifted Emma into his arms, standing up to his full height. He didn't look at Juliette, who was currently being pinned to the marble floor by security, wailing like a lunatic. Instead, Christopher slowly raised his eyes to the second-floor balcony of the master suite.

The heavy velvet curtains shifted again. For a brief second, the pale, aristocratic face of Estelle Pierce appeared behind the glass, watching the scene below with an icy, unbothered expression. She didn't look like a mother; she looked like a queen whose peasants were misbehaving.

"Liam," Christopher called out, his voice dropping to a dead, vibrating frequency that signaled total war. His head of security stepped forward immediately.

"Sir?"

"Take Emma to the guest cottage. Barricade the perimeter. No one goes in or out except Mrs. Yvette and the medical team I call. If anyone else—including my mother’s staff—comes within ten yards of my daughter, shoot to kill."

"Understood, Mr. Pierce."

Christopher handed his precious daughter over to Liam, forcing himself to smile reassuringly at her. "Go with Yvette, Emma. Get warm. Daddy has to go talk to Grandma."

Emma clutched Yvette’s neck, nodding tearfully. As they hurried away, Christopher turned back toward the main mansion. He slowly peeled off his wet outer shirt, leaving him in a dark, form-fitting undershirt, his muscles tense, his eyes burning with a lethal fire. He walked inside the house, each step heavy, deliberate, and pregnant with the promise of destruction.
