Chapter 2: The Matriarch’s Iron Throne

Chapter 2: The Matriarch’s Iron Throne

The master suite upstairs was a monument to old-world luxury. Gold-leaf molding lined the ceiling, and priceless Renaissance artwork hung on the walls. Estelle Pierce sat gracefully in a velvet armchair by the fireplace, sipping a cup of Earl Grey tea as if the attempted murder of her granddaughter hadn't just occurred in her backyard.
The heavy double doors of the suite didn't just open; they were kicked off their hinges, slamming against the walls with a thunderous crash.
Estelle didn't even flinch. She slowly set her teacup down on the porcelain saucer, her cold, calculating eyes drifting toward her son. "Christopher. You’ve always had a flair for the dramatic when you're upset. Pray tell, why are you ruining my doors?"
Christopher walked into the room, the aura of death surrounding him so thick that the two personal bodyguards standing by Estelle's chair instinctively reached for their holstered weapons.
"Touch your guns," Christopher whispered, not even looking at the guards, "and I will ensure your families starve in the streets by midnight."
The guards hesitated, looking at Estelle. She gave a slight, dismissive wave of her hand, and they stepped back.
"Leave us," Estelle commanded. The guards quickly exited, closing the broken doors as best they could.
Christopher threw the red-sealed envelope onto the table, right next to her teacup. The blood-stained medical report and the photograph of Lily slid across the polished wood.
"Explain this," Christopher said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Explain why the woman I loved is in a vegetative state in Switzerland, and why your signature is on the checks keeping her hidden from me for eight years."
Estelle glanced down at the photograph, her expression completely unchanged. She picked up her tea again, taking a delicate sip. "Lily Evans was a nobody, Christopher. A penniless girl from the slums who thought she could trap the heir to the Pierce billion-dollar fortune with a pregnancy. I offered her money to leave. She refused. She insisted on keeping the child and staying with you."
Estelle set the cup down, her voice turning sharp as steel. "A Pierce does not marry a beggar. It ruins the bloodline. It ruins the market value of our shares. So, I took care of the problem. The car accident was an unfortunate necessity. I preserved the child because a Pierce heir is useful for tax exemptions and trust fund structures. I gave you the girl, told you her mother abandoned her, and you built an empire out of your heartbreak. You should be thanking me."
Christopher felt the last shred of his humanity snap. He lunged forward, slamming both hands onto the table, leaning in until he was mere inches from his mother’s face.
"Thank you?" Christopher hissed, his eyes bloodshot. "You ordered a hit on the mother of my child! You left her to rot in a clinic! And then you brought a psychopath like Juliette into my house, who just tried to drown my daughter in the pool!"
"Juliette became greedy," Estelle dismissed carelessly. "She was supposed to be a compliant wife who would give you a legitimate heir. When she realized Emma held the ultimate voting shares in the family trust, she panicked. Her execution was sloppy. I told her to make it look like an accident, not a public spectacle."
"You told her..." Christopher whispered, horror washing over him. "You authorized it."
"Of course I did," Estelle said, standing up, her silk robe flowing behind her. She looked at her son with absolute dominance. "Emma is a bastard child. Her existence compromises our standing. If she dies, the entire inheritance reverts to you, and upon your death, back to the core family trust that I control. It’s simple mathematics, Christopher. Business."
"It's murder," Christopher corrected, his voice dropping to an icy, absolute finality.
"And who will believe you?" Estelle mocked, a cruel smile appearing on her thin lips. "I am Estelle Pierce. I own the judges in this city. I own the chief of police. The recording that old maid Yvette made is inadmissible in court—obtained illegally on private property. Juliette will take the fall for the pool incident. She is weak. But me? You can't touch me, Christopher. If you try to ruin me, you ruin the Pierce name, and your precious billion-dollar empire collapses with me."
Christopher slowly straightened up. The rage in his eyes transformed into something far worse: a cold, brilliant, and ruthless satisfaction.
He reached down to his wrist, turning over his luxury smartwatch. A tiny green light was flashing on the side of the bezel.
"You're right, Mother," Christopher said, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "Private recordings are tricky in court. But a live broadcast directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and every major news outlet in the country? That’s entirely different."
Estelle's smile froze. Her face began to drain of color. "What did you do?"
"Before I came up here, I activated the emergency broadcast protocol on my secure corporate network," Christopher explained, a dark, victorious smile spreading across his face. "Every single word you just said—confessing to the conspiracy to murder Lily Evans, laundering five million dollars through Swiss accounts, and authorizing Juliette to drown Emma—has just been recorded and transmitted to a secure federal server outside this state. The market value of Pierce shares is already tanking. And the federal agents are already passing through our front gates."
As if on cue, the distant, wailing sirens of multiple law enforcement vehicles began to echo from the long driveway outside the mansion.

Estelle stumbled backward, her hand flying to her throat. For the first time in her life, the untouchable matriarch looked terrified. "Christopher... I am your mother! You will destroy everything we built!"
"You didn't build anything, Estelle," Christopher said, turning his back on her as he walked toward the door. "You just ruled a graveyard. And today, the dead are coming back for you."
