Chapter 2 - The Letter Arrives

The morning after the wedding, the sun rose over the affluent neighborhood of Oak Ridge, casting a golden glow on the sprawling neo-Georgian mansion where Richard and Susan Thorne lived. Inside, the house smelled of stale champagne and expensive floral arrangements brought back from the reception. Susan sat at the marble kitchen island in a silk robe, sipping a mimosa and scrolling through her tablet with a triumphant smirk.

"Look at these photos, Richard," Susan gloated, showing the screen to her husband as he walked into the kitchen in his tennis whites. "The Oceanside Chronicle has already labeled Clara’s wedding as the social event of the season. Everyone who is anyone was there. And the best part? No old, depressing grandmother dragging down the aesthetic of the head table."

Richard poured himself a cup of coffee, though a strange, nagging knot had formed in his stomach. "Do you think we went too far, Susan? Leaving her at the gates like that... people noticed. A few of my business associates asked why Mom wasn't there."

"Oh, please," Susan scoffed, waving her hand dismissively. "You told them it was a clerical mistake by the event coordinator. It was perfect. She didn't make a scene, she left like a good little dog, and we got to take all the credit for funding the event. If your mother wants to live in her quiet little apartment, she can stay there."

Before Richard could answer, the heavy brass knocker on the front door echoed through the house. It was loud, rhythmic, and demanding.

The Special DeliveryRichard frowned, walking to the foyer and opening the heavy oak door. Standing on the porch was not a delivery driver, but a courier wearing a sharp gray suit and a badge identifying him as an officer of the county court.

"Richard Parker?" the man asked, his voice devoid of emotion.

"Yes?"

"You have been formally served." The courier handed Richard a thick, legal-sized envelope bound by a bright red corporate seal, turned around, and walked back to his vehicle without another word.

Susan walked into the foyer, her mimosa glass condensing in her hand. "What is that? A late wedding gift from one of your corporate partners?"

Richard broke the seal, his fingers trembling slightly as he pulled out the documents. As his eyes scanned the first page, the color drained completely from his face. The coffee mug in his hand slipped, shattering against the imported Italian tile floor, hot liquid pooling around his white sneakers.

"What is it, Richard?!" Susan demanded, snatching the papers from his hands. As she read the bold text, her smug composure dissolved into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic. "This... this can't be real! An eviction notice? A freeze on our accounts? She can't do this! We are her family!"

"She did do it, Susan," Richard whispered, his voice cracking as he collapsed against the wall. "She didn't just send a letter. She’s cutting us off completely."
