Chapter 5 - Susan’s Desperation

Susan Thorne-Parker had always prided herself on her social standing. She was the president of the Oak Ridge Charity Circle and a frequent feature in the city’s lifestyle magazines. But by Wednesday afternoon, her carefully constructed world was bleeding from a thousand cuts.

The news of Richard’s suspension from Parker Industries had leaked, and the neighborhood gossip mill was working overtime. Susan sat in her living room, frantically dialing the numbers of her closest high-society friends, only to be met with voicemail after voicemail.

"They're dodging my calls," Susan whispered, her manicured nails digging into her palms. "Every single one of them."

The Smear Campaign BackfiresIn a desperate bid to salvage her reputation, Susan decided to launch an offensive. She called a prominent local journalist who ran a high-society blog, offering an exclusive interview about how an "unstable, vengeful matriarch" was tearing a family apart and evicting her own grandchildren from their ancestral home.

The interview was scheduled to take place at an upscale cafe downtown. Susan arrived early, wearing her best designer sunglasses, ready to play the victim. But when the journalist arrived, he didn't bring a notebook—he brought a tablet.

"Susan, thanks for meeting me," the journalist said, sitting down and sliding the tablet across the table. "Before we talk about your mother-in-law, I think you should see what was sent to our editorial desk this morning."

Susan looked down at the screen. It was a high-definition video file recorded by the security cameras at the entrance of the Green Valley Estate. The audio was crystal clear. It showed Denise walking up in her pink silk dress, her face full of love, only for Richard and Susan to block her path. It captured Susan’s smirk, her triumphant gleam, and Denise’s dignified response: “If I’m a mistake, I apologize for the inconvenience.”

Attached to the video was a public statement from the venue itself, clarifying that Mrs. Denise Parker was the sole client and sponsor of the entire event, and that her exclusion was an act of personal malice by the couple.

"The internet is calling it 'The Elite's Cruelty,'" the journalist said, looking at Susan with a mixture of pity and disgust. "The video has already been shared ten thousand times on social media. If I publish your story, my magazine will be boycotted for supporting financial abusers. The interview is canceled."

Susan stared at the video playing on a loop—her own face looking back at her, exposed, ugly, and stripped of all its polished illusions. She was no longer a high-society queen; she was a public villain.
