Chapter 7 - The Legal Crushing

The deposition room at Hayes & Associates was clinical, cold, and blindingly bright. Richard and Susan sat on one side of the long glass table, flanked by a court-appointed public defender. They could no longer afford Julian Vance or any other high-priced defense attorney; their bank accounts had been completely frozen under the terms of the corporate embezzlement investigation.
Denise sat on the opposite side, her hands folded elegantly on top of her leather binder. Martin Hayes stood beside her, a mountain of financial evidence arranged in neat, color-coded stacks.
"Mr. Parker," Martin began, his voice echoing off the sterile walls. "We are here to review the terms of your voluntary restructuring agreement. If you sign these documents, my client will decline to press formal criminal charges for the corporate fraud and fund diversion we discovered last week."
Richard looked like a ghost of his former self. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes hollow, and his hands shook as he picked up the pen. "What are the terms, Martin?"
The Demolition of ArroganceMartin clicked his pen, reading from the master settlement sheet:
Asset Liquidation: The neo-Georgian mansion at Oak Ridge would be sold immediately. 100% of the proceeds would return to the Parker Family Legacy Trust.
Debt Repayment: Richard would surrender all corporate stock, bonuses, and retirement accounts to cover the $130,000 diverted for personal wedding expenses and social sponsorships.
The Relocation: Richard and Susan would be relocated to a modest, two-bedroom corporate rental property owned by the trust in the industrial district of the city. Their residency would be subject to a monthly behavioral review by Denise.

"This is slavery!" Susan shrieked, slamming her hand on the table. "You're stripping us of everything! We will be living in the slums! Denise, you are his mother! How can you do this to your own flesh and blood?!"
Denise did not blink. She leaned across the table, looking directly at the woman who had smirked at her while she stood humiliated in front of two hundred people.

"When you locked me out of my granddaughter's wedding, Susan, you decided that family meant nothing compared to image," Denise said, her voice dropping into a register that made the room go completely still. "I am simply taking your advice. I am separating business from pleasure. It is a business decision to remove bad investments from my ledger. And right now, both of you are bankrupt."
Richard looked at his wife, then at his mother, the realization of his complete and total defeat crashing down on him. He grabbed the pen, pushed Susan's hand away, and signed his name on the line.
