Chapter 5 - The Delivery and the Deception

The walk down the hallway to Conference Room A felt like a march to the gallows. When Zayn threw open the heavy glass doors, he expected to see the familiar, nervous faces of his corporate board. Instead, the room was filled with a massive, silent audience.

At the head of the table sat Audrey Robinson. She didn't look like a woman who had been betrayed; she looked like a judge. Beside her sat Julian Vance, two state police detectives in plain clothes, and the chairman of the central Thorne corporate board—the parent company that controlled his subsidiary.

"Zayn," the chairman said, his voice flat and devoid of any warmth. "Please take a seat. We have a great deal of forensic material to review before the board casts its votes."

Zayn felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He didn't sit down; he remained standing at the door, his hands deep in his pockets to hide their shaking. "Chairman, I have a complete pivot strategy for the summer line. We don't need the Robinson licenses to secure the European distribution rights—"

"This meeting isn't about the summer line, Mr. Thorne," Julian Vance interrupted, sliding a thick, blue legal folder across the glass table. "This meeting is about the criminal indictment for aggravated identity fraud, corporate asset embezzlement, and first-degree domestic battery through chemical endangerment."

The word battery hung in the air like a poisonous gas.

Zayn’s face turned an ash-gray color. "What... what are you talking about? That's ridiculous. This is a divorce tactic! Audrey is trying to manipulate the board because she’s bitter about my personal life!"

Audrey stood up from her chair, her movements slow, deliberate, and full of a terrifying, sovereign grace. She walked around the table until she was standing three feet from him, her amber eyes burning into his soul with a light that made him want to drop to his knees.

"I have the toxicological records from St. Jude’s Clinic, Zayn," Audrey said, her voice dropping into that quiet, diamond-hard baseline that cut through his defenses like a razor. "I have the signatures from the northern district pharmacy where you filled the estrogen-suppressive compounds under my medical proxy code for two years. I have the bank statements showing you used the company's petty-cash fund to pay the pharmacist for the off-record imports."

"Audrey... no," Zayn whispered, his knees buckling slightly as he took a step back toward the door. "No, you don't understand. I did it... I did it for us. You were so stressed about the business... I wanted to delay the pregnancy until the subsidiary was stable... I was going to stop..."

"You did it because you wanted to break me," Audrey said, her voice rising slightly, the raw power of her survival filling the room until every board member was staring at Zayn with pure horror. "You wanted me to believe I was broken so I would never look at the books. You wanted me to believe I was a failure so I would stay in that house and let you sign away my grandfather’s legacy to satisfy your vanity. You didn't just cheat on me, Zayn. You poisoned me."

Before Zayn could fire back, the glass doors swung open again, and an assistant ran into the room, her face pale. "Mr. Thorne! Maya... her water just broke in your office. She’s in severe pain. The paramedics are on their way up."

The room erupted into sudden, chaotic movement. Zayn looked at Audrey, then at the detectives who were already stepping forward with steel handcuffs, then toward the hallway where his mistress was screaming for help. His kingdom hadn't just cracked; it had turned into an abyss.
