Chapter 6 - A Mask Torn Away

The delivery room at Oceanside General Hospital smelled of antiseptic and ozone, a sterile theater where the consequences of Zayn’s double life were finally brought into the light. Maya had given birth two weeks early to a small, frail baby girl named Chloe. Because of Maya’s weak health and the intense stress of the corporate collapse, the infant had been immediately placed into an incubator in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Zayn stood outside the glass window of the NICU, two plainclothes officers waiting ten feet behind him in the hallway. He hadn't been processed into the county jail yet; Julian Vance had allowed a temporary legal variance so Zayn could sign the birth certificate and the emergency medical authorizations.
The elevator doors at the end of the hall clicked open, and Audrey stepped onto the floor. She was accompanied by Dr. Evelyn Mercer and a court-appointed family advocate.
Zayn turned around, his face hollow, his eyes sunken into dark circles. When he saw her, a desperate, pathetic hope flickered in his expression. "Audrey... please. Look at her. She’s so small. She doesn't have anything to do with the pharmacy or the board. Maya is refusing to sign the custody waivers because she says I’m broke. If you... if you withdraw the criminal complaint just until the baby is out of the hospital... I’ll sign over the brownstone. I’ll sign over everything."
Audrey walked to the glass window, looking down at the tiny, fragile life sleeping beneath the plastic hood of the incubator. Little Chloe’s chest rose and fell in quick, shallow cycles, innocent of the monstrous calculations that had brought her into the world.
"I’m not here for you, Zayn," Audrey said, her voice soft but entirely empty of mercy. "I’m here for her."
"What do you mean?" Zayn asked, his brow furrowing.
The court advocate stepped forward, opening a leather portfolio. "Mr. Thorne, because of your pending felony indictments and Miss Maya's formal declaration of financial abandonment filed with the state this morning, the Department of Children and Family Services has opened an emergency protection case. Miss Robinson has applied for, and been granted, temporary legal guardianship of Chloe Robinson-Thorne."
Zayn’s jaw dropped. "You... you’re taking my baby? After everything you said? You said you wouldn't let me turn your life into a ghost!"
"I am protecting a child from a father who treats human beings like liabilities," Audrey said, turning her gaze away from the glass to look him directly in the eyes. "Maya has already signed her parental rights over to the state in exchange for a financial settlement from the Robinson Trust. She’s leaving for New York tonight, Zayn. She didn't want the baby; she wanted the CEO. And you aren't a CEO anymore."
Zayn looked past her at the two detectives who were now stepping forward, their expressions heavy and final. One of them reached out, grabbing Zayn’s arm and pulling it behind his back. The steel handcuffs clicked into place with a sharp, bright sound that echoed through the quiet hospital corridor.
"Audrey!" Zayn screamed as they began to drag him toward the service elevator. "You can't do this! She’s my blood! It’s not fair! You can't have kids! You’re using my daughter to fix your own broken life!"
Audrey didn't look back at him as his shouting was swallowed by the heavy fire doors. She stood by the glass window, her hand reaching out to press against the cool surface, exactly in front of the little girl’s incubator.
"She’s wrong, Chloe," Dr. Mercer said gently, stepping up beside Audrey and placing a warm hand on her shoulder. "Your body is completely clear of the suppressive compound now, Audrey. The latest lab results show your reproductive baseline has returned to a completely healthy, optimal state. If you ever choose to have a child of your own in the future... the door is wide open."

Audrey let out a long, slow breath, a single, warm tear finally escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. It wasn't a tear of grief; it was the first drop of rain after a five-year drought.
"I already have a child to care for, Evelyn," Audrey whispered, looking at the tiny baby girl inside the glass. "And she’s never going to have to perform for her life."
