Chapter 9 - Starry Horizons

The evening air in Oceanside City carried that same clean, salty chill that Audrey had known her entire life. But tonight, as she stood on the wide, wooden deck of her coastal home, she didn't feel the need to be rinsed new by the wind. She was already complete.

Down on the sand, Julian was helping Chloe launch a small, handmade wooden sailboat into the gentle surf. The little girl’s giggles carried over the sound of the waves, her bright yellow windbreaker a point of pure color against the deep blue of the twilight ocean.
Audrey reached down, her right hand instinctively resting against her stomach beneath her soft cashmere sweater. A small, distinct, and beautiful movement answered her touch—a tiny, three-month-old secret that she and Julian had discovered just a few weeks earlier. A natural, healthy pregnancy that had arrived without medicine, without schedules, and without a single shadow of doubt.
"Mom! Look at it go!" Chloe shouted from the shoreline, pointing at the little boat as it caught the coastal current, its white sail reflecting the first light of the evening stars.
"I see it, baby!" Audrey called back, her voice clear and full of a sovereign, unyielding joy.

Julian looked back toward the deck, his gray eyes catching hers in the twilight, holding a wealth of love, respect, and shared survival that needed no words. He waved, his arm wrapping around Chloe’s shoulders to keep her warm as the stars began to decorate the wide Oregon sky.
Audrey smiled, looking out at the endless horizon where the dark water met the starlight. The old story—the one where she was the broken wife sitting in a corner booth, listening to a man explain her failure—was gone, drowned in the deep currents of the Pacific. Tonight, as she walked down the steps to join her family on the sand, Audrey Robinson knew that her life was finally, beautifully, and permanently her own.
