Chapter 8 - The Trial of TruthsSix years passed.

The year was 2026. The Oceanside creative district was experiencing a massive renaissance, and at the center of it was the global headquarters of Audrey Robinson Fine Jewelry. The historic brick building had been expanded into a stunning, light-filled compound that combined an independent design school, a state-of-the-art manufacturing floor, and a world-class showroom that attracted collectors from Paris, Milan, and New York.
Audrey sat at her mahogany desk, the afternoon sun warming her face. At thirty-six, she looked more beautiful than she ever had in her twenties. Her face held that deep, unshakeable confidence of a woman who had faced the dark and built her own light.
The door to her office opened softly, and a six-year-old girl came running into the room. She had big, expressive dark eyes and long, curly brown hair that flew behind her like a small cloud. In her hand, she held a large sheet of drawing paper covered in bright, unguided strokes of gold and blue pastel.
"Mom! Look!" Chloe cried, climbing up onto Audrey’s lap without a single trace of hesitation. "I drew the new collection for the spring show! It’s called The Starry Sky!"
Audrey laughed, a warm, clear sound that filled the room as she wrapped her arms around her daughter, kissing the top of her sweet-smelling head. "It’s beautiful, Chloe. Look at those lines. You have your grandfather’s eye for proportion."
"And her mother's knack for taking over the room," a deep, resonant voice added from the doorway.
Audrey looked up, her expression instantly softening into a genuine, radiant smile. Standing in the doorway was Julian Vance. Over the six years of legal battles, reconstruction, and shared custody updates, the professional relationship between the brilliant attorney and the independent designer had naturally, quietly evolved into something deep, permanent, and protective. They had been married two years earlier in a private ceremony on the very beach where Audrey used to walk to find her peace.
Julian walked into the room, setting a small velvet box on her desk before bending down to kiss Audrey's temple and lift Chloe into a playful hug. "The international distribution reports just arrived from Tokyo, corporate leader. The new sapphire line has completely sold out its pre-order allocation."
"That’s wonderful, Julian," Audrey said, her hand reaching out to wrap around his fingers, her skin warm and completely free of the silver scars of her past.
"There's something else in the mail today," Julian said, his voice dropping into a quiet, respectful tone as he handed her a small, official notice from the State Department of Corrections.
Audrey opened the envelope. It was a brief, administrative notification: ZAYN THORNE HAS EXTENDED HIS LEADER APPLICATION FOR PAROLE INDEFINITELY. APPLICATIONS FOR EARLY RELEASE DENIED. EXPIRATION OF MANDATORY SENTENCE PRESERVED FOR 2038.

Audrey looked at the paper for a single beat. The name didn't cause her heart to skip. It didn't bring back the smell of the restaurant or the cold weight of the anniversary confession. It was just ink on a page, a small piece of data from a world that had nothing to do with her reality.
She folded the paper neatly, dropped it into the wastebasket beside her desk, and stood up, taking her husband's hand with one arm and her daughter's hand with the other.
