Chapter 2: The Battle for Survival

Chapter 2: The Battle for Survival

The doors of the emergency operating room slammed shut, cutting Marcus off from his wife. He stood alone in the sterile, brightly lit hallway, his tuxedo stained with Khloe’s blood and the spilled champagne from the suite. The silence of the corridor was a sharp contrast to the chaos tearing through his heart.

He leaned against the wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor, his head buried in his hands. Every decision he had made over the past year flashed before his eyes like an indictment. He had married Khloe because he loved her quiet strength, her genuine heart, and the peace she brought to his chaotic world. But his mother, Victoria Thorne, had detested Khloe’s humble background. Victoria wanted Isabella—a woman of status, wealth, and manipulation—to be the mistress of the Thorne estate.

Isabella had used Victoria’s backing to slowly worm her way back into Marcus’s social circle. She had staged situations to make Khloe look paranoid, insecure, and unhinged. And Marcus, consumed by a multi-billion-dollar merger, had told Khloe to "just ignore it" and "stop being dramatic." He had chosen corporate peace over his wife’s protection. And tonight, that negligence had almost cost him his family.

The elevator doors at the end of the hall chimed open. The sharp, arrogant click of designer heels echoed down the corridor.

Marcus didn't have to look up to know who it was.

Victoria Thorne rushed toward him, her diamonds flashing under the fluorescent lights. Behind her walked the family’s head attorney, Richard Vance.

"Marcus!" Victoria gasped, looking at her son's disheveled state. "What on earth is happening? I was downstairs at the gala, and I saw security dragging Isabella out in handcuffs! Have you lost your mind? The press is everywhere! The rumors are already spreading that you had your mistress arrested at your own charity event!"

Marcus slowly stood up. The despair on his face vanished, replaced by an icy, lethal stillness that made even his mother freeze in her tracks.

"Mistress?" Marcus repeated the word, his voice dangerously soft. "Is that what she was to you, Mother? A suitable mistress you hoped would replace my wife?"

"Marcus, be reasonable," Victoria sniffed, crossing her arms. "Isabella told me what happened. Khloe attacked her in a fit of jealousy. Isabella was just defending herself. Khloe has always been unstable, and this pregnancy has clearly pushed her over the edge. Richard is here to drop the charges against Isabella and handle the press before this ruins our family name."

Marcus took a step toward his mother. The sheer fury radiating from him caused the veteran attorney, Richard, to take a step back, sensing the danger.

"Look at this," Marcus said, pulling his phone out and shoving the screen into his mother's face. He forced her to watch the security footage.

Victoria's eyes widened as she watched Isabella kick Khloe. For a second, a flicker of shock passed over her face, but she quickly masked it with her characteristic coldness. "Well... it looks bad, yes. Isabella was reckless. But Marcus, we can settle this quietly. A heavy financial settlement to Khloe’s family, a private clinic for her recovery... there is no need to involve the police and ruin Isabella's reputation over a domestic dispute."

"A domestic dispute?" Marcus’s laugh was dark and hollow. "She kicked my seven-month-pregnant wife in the abdomen, Mother. Khloe is in that operating room right now fighting for her life and the life of my son. And your only concern is Isabella’s reputation?"

"Marcus, think of the Thorne legacy! If this gets out—"

"To hell with the Thorne legacy!" Marcus roared, his voice booming through the corridor, shattering Victoria’s aristocratic composure. "Listen to me very carefully, Mother. If my wife or my son suffers even the slightest harm because of what happened tonight, I will not just ruin Isabella. I will dismantle everything you care about. I will strip you of your access to the Thorne trust. I will evict you from the estate. I will cut you out of my life so completely that you will die a lonely, forgotten woman in a rented apartment."

Victoria gasped, clutching her chest, her face turning pale. "Marcus! I am your mother!"

"And Khloe is my wife. The mother of my child," Marcus said, his eyes burning with absolute finality. "Richard," he turned to the attorney. "If I see you attempt to help Isabella, if I find out a single lawyer from our firm files a bail application for her, you are fired, disbarred, and ruined by tomorrow morning. Do I make myself clear?"

Richard swallowed hard, sweating profusely. "Crystal clear, Mr. Thorne. I... I will excuse myself immediately." Without looking back, the attorney turned and fled down the hallway.

Victoria stood frozen, realizing for the first time in her life that her son was no longer a boy she could manipulate. He was the apex predator of the Thorne family, and she had pushed him too far.

Before she could speak, the doors to the operating room opened. The chief obstetrician walked out, his surgical mask hanging around his neck. His face was exhausted, covered in sweat.

Marcus bypassed his mother entirely, lunging toward the doctor. "Doctor! How are they? Please tell me they’re alive."

The doctor offered a weary but reassuring smile. "It was a miracle, Mr. Thorne. The placental abruption was severe, but we managed to perform an emergency C-section just in time. Your wife suffered internal bruising, but she is stable and resting in the recovery unit."

Marcus felt a massive weight lift from his chest, his knees buckling slightly. "And my son?"

"He is premature, seven months, so his lungs are weak. We’ve placed him in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) incubator. He’s a fighter, Mr. Thorne. He’s stable for now, but the next forty-eight hours are crucial."

Marcus wept openly, nodding his head. "Can I see her? Can I see my wife?"

May you like

"Yes. But she needs absolute peace. No stress. No excitement."

Marcus turned his head slowly to look at Victoria, who was standing a few feet away, looking lost. "You heard the doctor, Mother. No stress. Leave this hospital. And don't ever let me catch you near my family again."
