Chapter 4: The Path to Healing

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was quiet, filled only with the rhythmic, soft ticking of medical monitors and the gentle hum of incubators.

Khloe sat in a wheelchair, her body still weak and sore from the emergency surgery, but her eyes were glued to the tiny, fragile life inside the glass incubator before her. Her son, whom they had named Ethan, was tiny, his little chest rising and falling rapidly with the help of a small breathing tube. He had Marcus’s dark hair and Khloe’s delicate facial features.

Marcus walked into the room quietly, having changed into a clean, simple shirt and trousers. He looked at the scene—his wife and his son—and a profound, painful wave of love and remorse washed over him.

He walked up behind Khloe, gently placing his hands on her shoulders.

Khloe didn't flinch, but she didn't look up either. Her voice was quiet, worn thin by hours of crying. "He’s so small, Marcus. He should still be safe inside me. He shouldn't be fighting for his life in a glass box."

Marcus dropped to his knees beside her wheelchair, taking her cold hand in his. He pressed it against his forehead. "I know, Khloe. I know. And it is entirely my fault. I was so caught up in proving myself to the world, in handling my mother, in managing the company, that I failed to see the danger right in front of us. I let that snake into our lives. I didn't protect you."

Tears streamed down Marcus’s face, his shoulders shaking. "I don't deserve your forgiveness, Khloe. If you want to take Ethan and leave me after this, if you want a divorce, I will give you everything. I will give you the entire empire if it means you and our son are safe and happy. But please... just let me stay until he is strong enough to leave this hospital. Let me take care of you until you are healed."

Khloe slowly turned her head to look at him. She saw the absolute devastation in his eyes. For months, she had felt lonely, wondering if she was just a trophy wife to him, a convenient match that his mother despised. But seeing him now, completely broken, stripped of his billionaire pride, and offering her his entire world just for her safety, she saw the man she had fallen in love with.

She reached out her other hand, her fingers gently sweeping through his dark hair. "I don't want your empire, Marcus. I never did. I only ever wanted you. The real you. Not the CEO of Thorne Global."

Marcus looked up, hope flickering in his tear-stained eyes. "Khloe..."

"I was angry at you," she admitted softly, a tear falling from her eye. "I was angry that you didn't believe me when I told you how Isabella treated me. But seeing how you protected us last night... seeing that you finally see the truth... I don't want a divorce. I want our family. But things have to change, Marcus. No more Thorne legacy ruling our lives. No more Victoria determining our peace."

"Everything changes today," Marcus promised solemnly, kissing the palm of her hand. "My mother has been removed from the company and the estate. She will never trouble you again. Isabella will spend the next two decades behind bars. From this moment on, my only job, my only purpose, is being your husband and Ethan’s father. The company can run itself; I am stepping back from daily operations."

Khloe offered him a small, beautiful smile—the first real smile he had seen on her face in months. "Then come here. Hold my hand, and let’s watch our son together."

Marcus stood up, pulling a chair close to her wheelchair. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to his chest. Together, they sat in the quiet nursery, their eyes fixed on the tiny boy in the incubator. For the first time in a very long time, the air felt light, free of the toxicity and manipulation that had plagued them. They were entering the fire of recovery, but they were doing it together.
