Chapter 2: The Mask Shatters

The accusation hung in the air like a localized thunderstorm. Daniel blinked, looking from the frozen image on the laptop screen to his wife's wrist. True to Arthur’s words, the flash of emerald and platinum on the screen perfectly matched the glittering timepiece Evelyn was currently wearing.

"This is absurd!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice shifting from haughty dominance to a frantic, high-pitched defensive whine. "Are you losing your mind, Arthur? Are you actually accusing the mistress of this house of stealing her own jewelry? I bought that necklace! It’s mine!"

"It belongs to the Harper family trust, Evelyn," Daniel said, his voice dangerously low as he stood up from his chair. He walked over to the laptop, studying the paused frame with intense scrutiny. "The trust explicitly states that the heirloom necklace must remain within the estate until Lily turns eighteen, at which point it passes to her. If it leaves the house or is sold before then, you violate the terms of our prenuptial agreement, forfeiting your monthly stipend."

Daniel turned to face his wife, his eyes filled with a sudden, horrifying realization. "You didn't lose it. You weren't robbed. You took it yourself to frame Grace, knowing I would never question your word, and you planned to smuggle it out of the house. Why?"

Grace stood quietly, holding Lily close, watching the woman who had tried to destroy her life in a matter of minutes unravel before her eyes.

"Daniel, sweetheart, you can't believe this old man and a blurry video!" Evelyn cried, reaching out to touch his arm, but Daniel stepped back, his expression hardened into stone.

"Arthur," Daniel commanded, "call the head of corporate security. I want a full sweep of Evelyn’s private vehicle and her personal safe at the downtown office. Now."

"Right away, sir," Arthur said with a polite bow, though a subtle, victorious smile touched the corners of his lips as he reached for the desk phone.

Evelyn backed away toward the door, her face pale, the elegant facade she had maintained for years cracking completely. She looked at Grace with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You think you've won? You're just a glorified servant. You're nothing!"

"She is the woman who loved my daughter when you were too busy spending my family's money," Daniel said, stepping between Evelyn and Grace. "Get out of my sight, Evelyn. Go to the guest wing. Do not go near Lily, and do not touch a single item in this house until my lawyers arrive."

As Evelyn stormed out of the room, slamming the heavy oak doors behind her, Lily stopped crying. She looked up at Grace, her small eyes wide. "Does this mean Grace doesn't have to leave, Daddy?"

Daniel walked over, kneeling beside his daughter and the nanny he had so terribly wronged. He looked up at Grace, his eyes filled with immense guilt. "Grace... I am so profoundly sorry. I let my blindness and her manipulation cloud my judgment. Can you ever forgive me?"
