Chapter 3: The Depths of the Conspiracy

Chapter 3: The Depths of the Conspiracy

The following morning, the Harper mansion was under a state of siege, not from enemies outside, but from the legal team Daniel had unleashed. By noon, the head of security returned from the downtown office with a velvet pouch found hidden inside the false bottom of Evelyn’s designer briefcase. Inside was the missing diamond heirloom necklace, along with a stack of bank statements from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

Daniel sat at his desk, his head in his hands, as Arthur poured him a cup of black coffee. Grace sat across from him, having agreed to stay through the transition for Lily’s sake, though the atmosphere in the house remained incredibly tense.

"It's worse than I thought, Grace," Daniel said, lifting his head. His face looked aged, the stress lines deeply etched around his eyes. "Evelyn wasn't just trying to get rid of you because she disliked your influence over Lily. She was frantic. Her family’s real estate firm went bankrupt three months ago. She has been systematically draining funds from the Harper charitable foundations to prop up her father’s dying business."

Arthur stepped forward, placing a folder on the desk. "If I may, Mr. Harper. The forensic accountants have completed their preliminary review. Mrs. Harper had already forged your signature on an authorization form to liquidate Lily’s educational trust fund. The transfer was scheduled to go through tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM."

Grace gasped, covering her mouth. "She was going to rob her own daughter?"

"She knew you were observant, Grace," Arthur explained gently. "You manage Lily's daily schedule, you see the mail, and you noticed when the bank statements stopped arriving at the house. Evelyn knew it was only a matter of time before you mentioned the missing paperwork to Mr. Harper. Framing you for the theft of the necklace was a dual-purpose strategy: it explained the disappearance of a major asset, and it removed the only person in this house who was paying close enough attention to notice her fraud."

Daniel groaned, slamming his fist onto the desk. "I was so consumed with the international shipping mergers that I didn't see the viper sleeping in my own bed. If it weren't for you, Arthur, and your sharpness, my daughter’s future would have been erased, and an innocent woman’s life would have been ruined."

"I merely did my duty to the Harper name, sir," Arthur replied smoothly. "And to justice."

Daniel looked at Grace, his expression pleading. "Grace, I know I don't deserve it, but I need you. Lily needs you. The divorce proceedings are going to be a bloodbath. Evelyn will use every dirty trick in the book to fight for custody just to get her hands on a alimony settlement. I need someone I can trust completely to protect my daughter while I fight this war in the courts."

Grace looked out the window, where Lily was playing safely in the snow under the watchful eye of a security guard. She thought of the ten years of loyalty she had given this family, of holding Lily when she had her first fever, of teaching her how to read. She looked back at Daniel, seeing not a powerful billionaire, but a terrified father.

"I won't leave Lily," Grace said firmly. "I will stay. But we do this my way. Evelyn does not come near her, and you never doubt my loyalty to that little girl again."

"Never," Daniel vowed, signing the retention contract on the spot.
