Chapter 4: The Courtroom Battle

The divorce and custody trial of Harper v. Harper became the scandal of the year. Evelyn, backed by her father’s remaining high-profile legal contacts, launched a ferocious counter-offensive. She painted Daniel as an emotionally abusive, absent husband and claimed the security footage Arthur found had been maliciously altered by the staff to frame her.

Grace found herself thrust into the spotlight, arriving at the family court every day surrounded by a wall of security guards to protect her and Lily from the aggressive paparazzi.

On the third day of the trial, Grace was called to the stand. Evelyn’s ruthless defense attorney, a man known for breaking witnesses, stepped up to the podium with a predatory smile.

"Miss Collins," the attorney began, his voice dripping with condescension. "You’ve been a nanny for ten years. A simple position. Yet, you live in a luxury estate, eat premium food, and have access to the inner workings of one of the wealthiest families in the country. Isn't it true that you manipulated young Lily to secure your position, and that you conspired with the butler, Arthur Brooks, to oust my client so you could elevate your own status within the household?"

Daniel stood up in anger, but his lawyer pulled him back down. On the stand, Grace remained perfectly calm. She looked directly at the judge, ignoring the intimidating posture of the attorney.

"I took care of Lily because her mother was rarely home," Grace said, her voice clear and resonant throughout the courtroom. "While Mrs. Harper was attending galas and shopping in Paris, I was the one who stayed up with Lily during her asthma attacks. I don't care about the Harper wealth. I care about the child who was left behind in that wealth. The video footage speaks for itself. I don't wear half-million-dollar watches, and I don't liquidate children's trust funds."

The courtroom murmured in approval. The defense attorney frowned, shifting his tactics. "A touching speech, Miss Collins. But let’s talk about financial incentive. Is it not true that Mr. Harper recently revised his will to include a substantial financial trust for you in the event of his passing?"

Grace looked startled; she hadn't known about this. She looked over at Daniel, who gave her a solemn, supportive nod.

Before the defense attorney could press further, the heavy double doors of the courtroom burst open. Detective Vance, an investigator working alongside Detective Ruiz from the major financial crimes unit, entered the room carrying a sealed federal envelope. He walked straight to the prosecution table and handed the papers to Daniel’s lead council.

The prosecutor smiled, standing up immediately. "Your Honor, the state requests an immediate recess. Federal investigators have just executed a search warrant on the offshore accounts of the Sterling and Harper-Fuentes real estate holdings. We have definitive proof of international money laundering, signed directly by the defendant, Evelyn Harper, dating back two years before she ever met Mr. Harper."

Evelyn dropped her pen, her face turning a ghastly shade of gray as the realization hit her: this was no longer a simple divorce. It was a federal criminal conviction in the making.
