Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

While Richard fought to protect his family’s future in the corporate world, a shadow from Emily’s past was creeping toward the light.

Emily sat in the grand living room of the Hawthorne mansion, watching the boys build a massive fortress out of wooden blocks. For the past two weeks, she had transitioned into her new role. She no longer wore the navy uniform; instead, she wore comfortable jeans and soft sweaters. The house felt warmer, lighter, and more alive. Richard had fired the entire security team that had stood by while Victoria abused her power, replacing them with a highly vetted, professional detail recommended by the police department.

But Emily’s newfound peace was shattered when her phone rang from an unknown number.

She stepped into the hallway to answer it. “Hello?”

“Well, well, well. Look who made the front page of the New York Post,” a greasy, familiar voice sneered through the receiver. “Emily Carter, the billionaire’s savior. Who would have thought my pathetic ex-fiancé would strike it so rich?”

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart plummeted into her stomach. “Thomas...”

Thomas Miller. The man who had ruined her life four years ago. He was a manipulative gambler who had stolen her life savings, maxed out her credit cards, and left her framed for a corporate fraud scheme he had committed at his previous job. It was the reason she had fled to another state and taken a low-paying cash job as a housekeeper—to hide from his debts and the legal mess he had dragged her into.

“What do you want, Thomas?” Emily whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched the marble balustrade.

“I want what’s mine, Emmy,” Thomas chuckled, a sickening sound. “I see the news. You’re practically running the Hawthorne estate now. The papers say the billionaire gave you a trust fund worth hundreds of millions. Now, I can go to the media and tell them all about your past. I can tell them how you fled state lines to escape fraud charges. I wonder how the tech mogul will feel when he realizes his saintly nanny is actually a wanted criminal?”

“I didn't do anything wrong! You framed me!” Emily cried, tears of frustration stinging her eyes.

“Doesn't matter what the truth is, sweet cheeks. It matters what it looks like. A scandal like this would destroy your cozy little setup. I want five million dollars. Untraceable cash. You have forty-eight hours to get it from your billionaire boss, or I sell my story—and your location—to every tabloid and bounty hunter in the country.”

The line went dead.

Emily leaned against the wall, sliding down to the floor, her body shaking with deep, silent sobs. The nightmare was happening all over again. Just when she had found a family, just when she had secured a safe haven for the triplets, her past was going to destroy it all.

She couldn't tell Richard. He had already suffered so much betrayal from Victoria. If he found out she had a messy legal past, he would think she was just another grifter who had infiltrated his home.

“Emily?”

She jumped, looking up to see Richard standing at the end of the hallway. He had just returned from the office. He looked at her tear-stained face, his expression instantly shifting from weariness to intense concern.

He walked over quickly and knelt beside her. “Emily, what’s wrong? Did something happen to the boys?”

“No, no, the boys are fine,” she lied, wiping her face frantically. “I’m just... I’m just tired.”

Richard looked at her closely. Over the past few weeks, he had begun to truly see Emily—not just as a guardian for his kids, but as a deeply resilient, beautiful, and complex woman. He could tell when she was hiding something.

“Emily, look at me,” Richard said gently, taking her hand. “We swore we wouldn't have any more secrets in this house. Whatever it is, you don't have to face it alone anymore. Tell me.”

Looking into his eyes, Emily saw a vulnerability and warmth that Richard Hawthorne had never shown to the public. The arrogant billionaire was gone; in his place was a man who genuinely cared. Slowly, between broken sobs, Emily confessed everything about Thomas, the fraud, and the blackmail.

When she finished, she braced herself for his anger, for the inevitable rejection.

Instead, Richard’s grip on her hand tightened. His eyes didn't fill with suspicion; they burned with a cold, protective rage directed entirely at Thomas Miller.

“Five million, huh?” Richard murmured, a dangerous smile touching his lips. “He thinks he can threaten you in my house. He has no idea who he's messing with.”
