Chapter 7 - The Trial of Victoria Lane

The peace they had found was briefly interrupted by the reality of the legal system. Six months after her arrest, the trial of Victoria Lane began in a high-profile federal courthouse.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, socialites, and cameras. Victoria sat at the defense table, looking pale and gaunt. Her legal team had attempted every trick in the book—claiming temporary insanity, claiming the children had fabricated the story, and even trying to smear Emily’s character once again by bringing up her past, though the judge immediately threw out those attempts due to the federal exoneration documents.

Richard and Emily arrived together, holding hands as they walked through the gauntlet of flashing cameras outside the courthouse. They were a united front.

When it came time for the prosecution to present its case, the DA called Emily to the stand as the star witness.

Emily walked up to the podium, her head held high. She wore an elegant, tailored emerald-green suit. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely unbothered by the venomous glares Victoria was shooting her from across the room.

The prosecutor turned to her. “Ms. Carter, please describe what happened on the morning of April 14th.”

Emily took a steady breath. She spoke with a calm, unyielding clarity that resonated through the entire courtroom. She detailed the years of emotional neglect she had witnessed Victoria inflict on the boys. She described the chilling phone calls she had overheard regarding the forced exile of the triplets to overseas boarding schools. And finally, she described the moment she saw the three little boys running down the street, covered in blood and terrified for their lives.

“Victoria Lane did not see those children as human beings,” Emily said, her voice echoing with a fierce authority. “She saw them as obstacles to a fortune. She locked three five-year-old boys in a dark basement and used violence to try and silence them because she knew her lies were about to be exposed.”

The defense attorney stood up for cross-examination, trying to shake her. “Ms. Carter, isn't it true that you were a disgruntled employee? That you wanted to ruin Miss Lane’s marriage because you had designs on Mr. Hawthorne yourself?”

Before Emily could answer, Richard stood up from his seat in the front row of the gallery, his imposing presence instantly drawing every eye in the room.

“Objection to the slanderous nature of the question, Your Honor,” the prosecutor shouted.

The judge banged his gavel. “Sustained. Counselor, move on or I will hold you in contempt.”

The final, devastating blow to Victoria’s defense came when the prosecution played a piece of evidence no one expected. Richard’s new security team had managed to recover deleted cloud audio footage from the mansion’s smart-home intercom system on the day of the incident.

The courtroom fell into a dead, horrifying silence as Victoria’s own voice blasted through the speakers:

“You little brats! Shut up! Shut up or I’ll make sure your father never sees you again! If you cry one more time, I’ll lock you in this basement until you rot! Your precious Emily isn't coming back—she’s a thief, and you're next!”

The audio was followed by the agonizing sound of a crystal vase shattering, and the desperate, terrified screams of three little boys.

Several members of the jury gasped, some even wiping away tears. Victoria buried her face in her hands, realizing that there was no way out.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

The verdict was unanimous: Guilty on all counts of first-degree child endangerment, felony assault, corporate framing, and false reporting of a crime.

The judge ordered Victoria to be taken into immediate custody without bail. Before she was led away in handcuffs, the judge looked down at her with absolute disdain.

“Victoria Lane, your actions were malicious, calculated, and predatory. You targeted innocent children out of sheer greed. I am sentencing you to the maximum penalty allowed by law: fifteen years in a maximum-security state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole.”

As the guards led a sobbing, hysterical Victoria out of the courtroom, Richard and Emily stood up, turning their backs on her completely. They didn't feel a sense of triumph; they felt an overwhelming sense of relief. The monster was officially locked away, and their children were finally, completely safe.
