Chapter 8 - A Real Mother

The summer sun shone brightly over the rolling green lawns of the Hawthorne estate. It was the triplets’ sixth birthday, and the backyard had been transformed into a magnificent carnival. There were bounce houses, a cotton candy machine, a petting zoo, and dozens of children from their new school running around, laughing and playing.

Arthur Vance and several members of the Hawthorne board of directors were there, too, mingling with the guests. The company’s stock had completely rebounded, reaching an all-time high due to the public’s immense respect for Richard’s handling of the crisis and his newfound philanthropic initiatives focusing on child protection and domestic abuse prevention.

Richard stood by the barbecue, wearing a ridiculous apron that said “World’s Okayest Chef”—a birthday gift from the boys. He was laughing with Marcus as they flipped burgers.

Emily walked out of the kitchen, carrying a massive, three-tiered chocolate birthday cake decorated with custom superhero figures. As soon as the triplets saw her, they abandoned their friends and ran over, jumping up and down.

“Cake! Cake! Miss Emily made the cake!” they cheered in unison.

Richard walked over, wiping his hands on a towel, his eyes shining with love as he looked at Emily. He helped her place the heavy cake onto the center table.

“Alright, boys, make a wish,” Richard said, putting his arms around Ethan and Noah, while Liam squeezed himself between Emily’s legs.

The three boys closed their eyes tightly, took a deep breath, and blew out the candles together as the entire crowd clapped and cheered.

As the guests began to line up for a slice of cake, Ethan tugged on Emily’s skirt.

“Miss Emily?” the little boy asked, looking up with big, soulful brown eyes that looked exactly like his father’s.

Emily knelt down to his level. “Yes, sweetie? What is it?”

Noah and Liam walked over, too, standing close to their brother. They looked nervous, exchanging a series of quiet nods before Ethan spoke again.

“We made a birthday wish,” Ethan whispered. “We wished for the same thing. All three of us.”

“Oh yeah? What did you wish for?” Emily smiled, smoothing back his messy hair.

“We asked if... if we don't have to call you Miss Emily anymore,” Ethan said, his voice dropping to a shy, hopeful tone.

Emily blinked, her heart skipping a beat. “What do you want to call me, sweetie?”

Noah stepped forward, his tiny voice steady and filled with a profound emotion that shook Emily to her core.

“Can we call you Mom? Because you're the only real mom we’ve ever had.”

The backyard seemed to fall completely silent. Emily felt a rush of heat behind her eyes, and tears began to stream down her face uncontrollably. She looked up at Richard, who was standing right behind his sons. He had tears in his own eyes, nodding at her with a tender, encouraging smile.

Emily reached out, pulling all three boys into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying her face in their shoulders as she cried tears of pure, unadulterated joy.

“Yes,” Emily sobbed, her voice thick with emotion. “Yes, my beautiful, sweet boys. You can call me Mom. I would be the luckiest woman in the world to be your mom.”

The triplets cheered, wrapping their arms around her neck, holding her so tightly that she felt as if she were floating. For three years, she had loved them in the shadows, bound by the professional constraints of a servant. But now, the universe had rewritten their destiny. She wasn't their housekeeper anymore. She was their mother.
