Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

Richard didn't waste a single hour. He immediately called his personal head of security, Marcus, a former elite military intelligence officer, along with his high-priced team of white-collar defense attorneys.
Within twelve hours, Richard’s legal team had unearthed the entire file on Thomas Miller. It took less than a day for Richard's investigators to prove what Emily had known all along: Thomas had used her identity and signatures to orchestrate a dummy corporation to launder money for an illegal gambling ring. The evidence was all there, buried deep in offshore servers, but the small-town police department in Emily’s home state simply hadn't possessed the resources or tech-savviness to uncover it.
“We have everything we need to clear your name completely, Emily,” Richard said as they sat in his private study the next evening. The room was warm, a fire crackling in the hearth, while the boys slept soundly upstairs. “But I don't just want to clear your name. I want to make sure Thomas Miller never walks free again.”
Emily looked at the documents on the desk, a massive weight lifting off her shoulders. “How? He told me he would go to the media if he didn't get the money tomorrow.”
Richard leaned forward, placing a warm hand over hers. “We’re going to give him exactly what he asked for. Or rather, we’re going to make him think he’s getting it. Marcus has arranged a drop location at an abandoned warehouse near the docks. I will personally deliver the briefcase.”
“No! Richard, it’s too dangerous!” Emily cried, her eyes wide with fear. “Thomas is desperate. He’s unstable.”
“He’s a bully, Emily. And bullies run when they face a real threat,” Richard said softly, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. “He threatened the woman who saved my children. He threatened the peace of my family. I am going, and I am ending this.”
The next night, the fog rolled heavy over the city’s industrial shipping docks. Thomas Miller stood inside a dilapidated warehouse, nervously checking his watch. He paced back and forth, a smug grin plastered across his face as he imagined the luxury lifestyle he was about to inherit with five million dollars of Hawthorne cash.
The heavy iron door of the warehouse creaked open.
A single figure walked through the fog, silhouetted by the dim streetlights outside. It was Richard Hawthorne. He wore a heavy black overcoat and carried a sleek, aluminum briefcase in his right hand.
“You’re late, billionaire,” Thomas barked, trying to sound intimidating, though his voice shook slightly as he faced the imposing figure of the tech mogul.
“I had to ensure we weren't followed,” Richard said, his voice smooth and unnervingly calm. He walked to the center of the warehouse and tossed the briefcase onto a rusty metal table between them.
Thomas lunged forward, greed consuming him. He popped the latches of the briefcase, expecting to see stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
Instead, his face fell. The briefcase was empty except for a high-definition tablet screen.
As Thomas stared at it, the screen lit up, displaying a live video feed. It showed a group of federal agents breaking down the front door of Thomas’s current apartment, boxes of his illegal gambling ledgers being seized, and his accomplices being led away in handcuffs.
“What... what is this?!” Thomas shrieked, backing away.
“That is the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Division,” Richard said, calmly crossing his arms. “While you were busy planning how to spend my money, my tech teams traced your blackmail call, bypassed your encrypted servers, and handed over four years of your financial fraud data to the federal government on a silver platter. The warrant for your arrest was signed two hours ago.”
Thomas pulled a small pocket knife from his jacket, his face twisted in a desperate rage. “You think you're so smart?! I’ll kill you! I’ll still go to the press about Emily!”
Before Thomas could take a single step forward, the shadows of the warehouse came alive. Six heavily armed private security operators stepped out from behind the crates, laser sights painting Thomas’s chest with bright red dots. Marcus stepped forward, effortlessly disarming Thomas and pinning him to the floor with a heavy boot to his back.

Richard walked over, looking down at the groveling blackmailer with absolute disgust.
“The press won't care about a word you say, Thomas. Because tomorrow morning, the Department of Justice is releasing a statement clearing Emily Carter of all previous allegations, naming you as the sole perpetrator. You’re going to federal prison for extortion, child endangerment threats, and corporate fraud. Enjoy the rest of your life in a cage.”
