Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Glass

Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Glass

Marcus Thorne had faced hostile boardrooms, billion-dollar negotiations, and public scandals without ever losing his composure.
Nothing had prepared him for what he saw when he pushed open the hospital suite door.
The room looked like a battlefield.
Crystal glittered across the polished marble floor. An overturned chair rested against the wall. The scent of expensive perfume mixed with the sharp smell of antiseptic.
And in the middle of it all...
Khloe.
His wife lay curled beside the marble coffee table, both arms wrapped desperately around her seven-month pregnant belly. Her breathing came in ragged gasps, tears streaking her pale cheeks as she struggled to shield their unborn son.
Standing over her was Isabella Rossi.
One crimson stiletto remained raised.
For one frozen heartbeat, nobody moved.
Marcus's mind refused to process what his eyes were seeing.
Then Khloe cried out.
"Marcus..."
The pain in her voice shattered his paralysis.
He rushed forward.
"What happened?"
Before Khloe could answer, Isabella's expression transformed with astonishing speed.
The rage vanished.
Her shoulders trembled.
Tears welled instantly in her eyes.
"Marcus..." she whispered. "She attacked me."
Marcus stopped only long enough to stare at her.
"What?"
"I came to congratulate her after the gala." Isabella pressed trembling fingers against her own shoulder. "She accused me of trying to ruin your marriage. She became hysterical. I tried to calm her down..."
She glanced toward the broken glass.
"...and she slipped."
Khloe stared at Isabella in disbelief.
"You kicked me."
"I did no such thing."
"You—"
A violent cramp seized Khloe's abdomen.
She screamed.
Marcus dropped to his knees beside her.
"Khloe! Stay with me."
"My stomach..."
She clutched his tuxedo jacket.
"The baby..."
Those two words drained every trace of color from Marcus's face.
He pressed the emergency call button with enough force to nearly break it.
Within seconds, alarms echoed through the maternity floor.
Doctors and nurses flooded into the suite.
"Seven months pregnant!"
"Possible abdominal trauma!"
"Get fetal monitoring!"
"Move!"
Marcus stepped back only because three physicians physically guided him away.
One nurse looked directly into his eyes.
"Sir, we need room."
"I want to stay."
"You'll only slow us down."
The doors slammed shut.
Marcus stood motionless in the hallway.
He could still hear Khloe crying inside.
Each sound felt like a knife.
Isabella approached cautiously.
"I'm so sorry this happened."
Marcus didn't answer.
"I never wanted—"
"Don't."
His voice was cold.
Colder than she'd ever heard.
"I know what I saw."
"You saw her fall."
"I saw you standing over my wife."
"You don't understand."
Marcus slowly turned toward her.
For the first time in years, Isabella felt genuine fear.
His eyes held none of the warmth that had once existed between old family friends.
Only suspicion.
Only anger.
"You'd better hope," he said quietly, "that you're telling me the truth."
Downstairs, another man sprinted through the hospital entrance.
David Carter barely acknowledged security as he flashed his identification.
"I need Suite 1804."
"The maternity floor?"
"My niece is up there."
The guard immediately recognized him.
"Mr. Carter—"
"I don't have time."
David wasn't merely Khloe's uncle.
He was chairman of the hospital's governing board.
Half the staff knew him personally.
The elevators were already waiting by the time he reached them.
Something deep inside him felt wrong.
Khloe had called him only an hour earlier.
She had sounded nervous.
Almost frightened.
"I'll explain later," she'd said.
"There are things you deserve to know."
She had never gotten the chance.
When David reached the maternity floor, he immediately spotted Marcus pacing outside the operating suite.
"What happened?"
Marcus looked up.
"David..."
His voice cracked.
"They're trying to save the baby."
David's blood ran cold.
"What?"
Marcus explained in broken sentences.
Isabella.
The argument.
The fall.
The kick.
The accusation.
David listened without interrupting.
Then he looked toward Isabella.
She stood several yards away, arms folded tightly around herself.
Their eyes met.
Something about her expression bothered him.
She wasn't terrified.
She was calculating.
A young security supervisor hurried down the hallway carrying a tablet.
"Mr. Carter."
"What is it?"
The supervisor hesitated.
"We've already secured the incident area."
"Good."
"But..."
"What?"
"There were surveillance cameras covering the executive suite hallway."
David frowned.
"The cameras were operating?"
"Yes, sir."
"Do we have footage?"
The supervisor nodded slowly.
"It captured everything outside the room."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Outside?"
"The door was partially open during most of the incident."
Silence settled over the hallway.
David looked toward Isabella again.
For the first time...
She looked worried.
Inside the treatment room, monitors beeped steadily.
Dr. Emily Lawson examined Khloe carefully while another physician monitored the baby's heartbeat.
"Heartbeat?"
"Stable."
"Placenta?"
"No obvious separation."
Khloe squeezed the doctor's hand.
"My baby..."
"He's fighting."
"Please..."
"You need to stay calm."
"I can't lose him."
"You won't."
Dr. Lawson wasn't making promises.
She simply refused to let panic spread.
"Your son is stronger than you realize."
Khloe closed her eyes.
She silently prayed.
Not for herself.
Only for her child.
Outside, David and Marcus followed the security supervisor into the surveillance office.
The technician inserted the encrypted drive.
The recording appeared.
Timestamp.
9:42 p.m.
Khloe entered the suite alone.
Minutes later—
Isabella.
She didn't knock.
She walked straight inside.
The two women disappeared beyond the doorway.
There was no audio.
Only images.
Marcus leaned closer.
The argument became obvious almost immediately.
Khloe backed away.
Hands raised.
Trying to de-escalate.
Isabella advanced.
Aggressive.
Relentless.
Then—
Khloe pointed toward the door.
Clearly asking her to leave.
Instead...
Isabella shoved her.
Hard.
Khloe slammed backward into the marble table.
Crystal exploded across the room.
Marcus stopped breathing.
"No..."
The footage continued.
Khloe struggled to protect her stomach.
She couldn't even stand.
Then Isabella stepped forward.
Lifted one designer heel.
And drove it violently toward Khloe's side.
Marcus recoiled from the screen.
David clenched both fists so tightly his knuckles turned white.
The technician whispered,
"My God..."
The next frame showed Marcus entering.
Exactly as he had remembered.
Except now...
There could be no doubt about what had happened before he arrived.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Finally David broke the silence.
"Copy this footage."
"Already done."
"Three encrypted copies."
"Yes, sir."
Marcus stared at the frozen image of Isabella standing over Khloe.
His voice was barely audible.
"She lied."
David nodded.
"Yes."
Marcus closed his eyes.
Every conversation he'd had with Isabella over the past year replayed in his memory.
Every subtle insult toward Khloe.
Every "accidental" misunderstanding.
Every attempt to create distance between husband and wife.
He had dismissed them all as harmless jealousy.
He had been wrong.
Terribly wrong.
A nurse suddenly burst into the surveillance room.
"Mr. Thorne!"
Marcus turned instantly.
"Your wife is awake."
"And the baby?"
The nurse smiled for the first time that night.
"The heartbeat is strong."
Relief crashed over Marcus so powerfully that his knees nearly gave out.
But before he could leave, David stopped him.
"Marcus."
He handed him the tablet.
"Take one last look."
Marcus watched Isabella's attack one final time.
Then he handed the device back.
His face had changed.
The grief remained.
But something else had appeared beneath it.
Resolve.
He looked directly at David.
"I'm done protecting her."
David answered with quiet certainty.
"Then tomorrow..."
He glanced once more at the screen.
"...the whole truth comes out."
Neither of them noticed the young hospital employee standing just outside the surveillance room.
She had witnessed the recording.
She had also recognized Isabella Rossi immediately.
And within minutes, a single anonymous message was already on its way to one of the country's most influential investigative journalists.

By sunrise, the scandal would no longer be confined to a hospital hallway.
It would become national news.
